Sending another Good News Downtown, a communication to showcase uplifting, interesting, positive stories about activities and people Downtown.

Can you believe it? In just under a week, we will host the first of six matches of the 2026 FIFA Men’s Word Cup being played right here in Seattle. As we welcome the world to Seattle for these games, I couldn’t be more excited for what this moment means for our city. This is more than a historic sports milestone, but a celebration of global culture, community, and the extraordinary creative spirit that defines Seattle. Over the coming weeks, our Waterfront, Pioneer Square, Chinatown-International District, Downtown, and Seattle Center will come alive with pop‑up shops, art installations, live performances, and interactive experiences that showcase the best of our local entrepreneurs, culturally diverse communities, and artists. These activations are not only vibrant expressions of who we are, but powerful reminders of how local creativity fuels our economy.

Hosting a major international event on this scale brings a once‑in‑a‑generation opportunity for economic growth. Visitors from across the globe will step into our small businesses, explore our restaurants and cafés, stay in our hotels, and engage with local makers whose products reflect the character and diversity of our neighborhoods. For many small business owners, this surge of foot traffic and visibility can translate into longer-term expanded economic stability. And for our creative sector, such as our artists, performers, and cultural organizations, this moment amplifies their work on a worldwide stage and for permanent installations where their work will be remembered for years to come.

Just as important is the sense of civic pride and unity that World Cup brings with it. Seattle is known for innovation, inclusion, and community-driven energy, and now millions of eyes are on us as we show what that looks like in action. The events and programs unfolding across the city, whether it’s a family joining a watch party at Seattle Center, a fan exploring the Waterfront’s soccer-themed activations, or a visitor discovering a local business owner at a Pioneer Square pop‑up, will demonstrate the power of public space and cultural expression to bring people together.

Every activation, every small business partnership, and every neighborhood celebration is part of our ongoing work to ensure Seattle’s economic health is strong, resilient, and inclusive. The  World Cup may be temporary, but the impact we create, like the boosted visibility for local businesses, stronger community connections, and a reputation as a welcoming global city, will last far beyond the final whistle.

🙌⚽ The Space Needle transformed into a giant soccer ball! Visible across Downtown and beyond, this new look celebrates Seattle’s role as host city as visitors arrive and TV streams go global: Seattle Space Needle gets soccer-ball roof for World Cup – Axios Seattle.

🌃🏆 To complement the Space Needle’s new soccer-ball roof, Visit Seattle and Seattle Center is launching a first-of-its-kind drone “scoreboard” after each Seattle World Cup match. The 12-minute aerial show will display team flags and final scores above the Seattle Center campus, creating a nightly celebration for fans: FIFA Men’s World Cup fans will be kept updated with drone scoreboard – The Seattle Times.

🚆🚌 Transportation agencies are rolling out expanded service to help people move through Downtown and beyond. Increased Link light rail frequency, additional Sounder service, free Match Day and Waterfront shuttles, and enhanced ferry connections are all part of the plan. 🎶🎨 Pioneer Square is transforming into a month-long showcase of local culture. From public art installations and gallery exhibitions to live music, immersive experiences, watch parties, and community events, the neighborhood is leaning into its role as one of Downtown’s creative hubs: What’s changing in Seattle’s Pioneer Square for World Cup 2026 – The Seattle Times.

🚇⚕️ Preparing to welcome an estimated 750,000 visitors, the Seattle Public Health Department released health and safety guidance covering transportation, extreme heat, air quality, food safety, and healthcare access. These resources can help small businesses prepare for increased foot traffic, fan events, and international visitors: Official insights from Public Health – Seattle and King County Staff.

🏙️🚶ICYMI: While NOT World Cup-specific and NOT referencing the Gumwall, a new report highlights Downtown’s momentum, which ranks fourth nationally for “stickiness” – a measure of how often people visit and how long they stay. More than half of Seattle residents surveyed said they visit Downtown at least weekly, and many reported sticking around the area longer than planned. The report also highlighted Seattle’s strong transit network as critical to this trend: Seattle’s downtown ranks among nation’s “stickiest” – Axios Seattle.

🌊🥅 Get ready for the Seattle Soccer Celebration, a unique waterfront fan experience for the World Cup. From June 11 – July 6, head down to Pier 62 for an unforgettable event featuring a floating mini-pitch, waterfront watch parties on a massive LED screen, music, food, and more.

📺🛍️ The World Soccer Fan Celebration at Seattle Center runs from June 11 – July 19. The celebration will feature watch parties, cultural festivals, music, art, family activities, and food and drinks to celebrate the global spirit of the game. A Global Marketplace will also showcase local businesses, artists, makers, and community vendors.

⚽🏠 Pacific Place will become the “Seattle Soccer House.” From June 15 – July 2, and again July 6 – 7, Pacific Place will transform into a free, all-ages fan hub. Experience immersive match viewing, interactive cultural zones, local food and retail, and family-friendly spaces from 8 a.m. – 10 p.m.

🏮🥟 Get ready for the C-ID Summer Kickoff! On Thursday, June 18, from 3 – 9 p.m., the C-ID Block Party, Wing Luke Museum JamFest, and CIDBIA are teaming up for an unforgettable day in the Chinatown-International District. This free, all-ages celebration of AANHPI culture will feature World Cup activities, live music and DJs, local food vendors, small business shopping, and an official Guinness World Record™ attempt for the World’s Largest Dim Sum Meal.
