Meeting gutter slope requirements
What’s the official design specification for gutter slope? Reference Sheet B, General Note 16 states that ‘gutters shall have a slope not less than 1/8th inch per foot along the entire length.’
How will we assess this? Measuring the exact slope can be difficult. Inspectors want to see evidence that there is some slope, so that the gutter is free-draining and doesn’t pool. A simple way to show this is to put a level on top of the gutter. Take a photo - like this one - to provide to your inspector. If this shows some degree of slope, then we assume that it is acceptable. We also want you to observe that there is no pooling along the length of the gutter. If you need to assess this on a dry day, you can pour water into the gutter and simply watch to make sure that it drains without pooling.
Note that we recommend you avoid making any adjustments to existing gutters unless necessary.
