Rebates have gone up, effective immediately

  • Cisterns: $7.57/sq ft roof area captured
  • Rain gardens: $13.12/sq ft roof area captured

The rebate calculator has been updated with the new rates. This increase responds to our latest analysis of real-world installation costs, and the different benefits that cisterns and rain gardens offer in contributing to our goal of reducing stormwater in the combined sewer system.

New Basin Coming

Magnolia Basin opening in May

Photo Neighborhood

King County is excited to announce the opening of a new basin in the Magnolia neighborhood at the beginning of May. We anticipate a lot of interest among eligible community members in this area. You may see an increase in calls and emails as we start to promote RainWise in this neighborhood.

We will send you an email when this basin is officially open and the online eligibility map has been updated.

For questions, please reach out to Amelia Bahr (abahr@kingcounty.gov)

Welcoming Nick Anspach as Acting Lead Inspector for King County

Nick Anspach has dark hair, a mustache and wears glasses

While King County lead inspector Ben Gregory is on parental leave, Nick Anspach will fill in as the lead RainWise inspector. Nick is a stormwater drainage inspector with King County and has been training with Ben on RainWise inspections over the last few months. He has about four years of inspection experience between King County and previous positions in Colorado

Welcome Nick!

Inspector Tips:

Meeting gutter slope requirements

What’s the official design specification for gutter slope? Reference Sheet B, General Note 16 states that ‘gutters shall have a slope not less than 1/8th inch per foot along the entire length.’

A level set on top of a gutter showing a small amount of slope. This type of photo is acceptable as evidence of gutter slope

How will we assess this? Measuring the exact slope can be difficult. Inspectors want to see evidence that there is some slope, so that the gutter is free-draining and doesn’t pool. A simple way to show this is to put a level on top of the gutter. Take a photo - like this one - to provide to your inspector. If this shows some degree of slope, then we assume that it is acceptable. We also want you to observe that there is no pooling along the length of the gutter. If you need to assess this on a dry day, you can pour water into the gutter and simply watch to make sure that it drains without pooling.

Note that we recommend you avoid making any adjustments to existing gutters unless necessary.
