Route 40: Project Updates - February 6, 2026

Dear community members,

The Route 40 Transit-Plus Multimodal Corridor Project continues to make progress in the Fremont neighborhood and in Ballard along NW Leary Way and 15th Ave NW. Crews continue to advance utility, sidewalk, and bus stop improvements.

This work will support faster, more reliable transit service, safer pedestrian access, and upgraded street infrastructure in the corridor. Below is the latest construction update and what to expect in the coming weeks.


What's happening in Ballard

Westbound NW Leary Way (West of 15th Ave NW)

Crews are completing bus stop foundations, sidewalks, curb ramps, and roadway improvements along NW Leary Way near 15th Ave NW. The updates below outline recent progress and what to expect next in the area, weather permitting.

Crews recently:

  • poured concrete foundations for new bus stop features

  • backfilled conduit trenches and graded the area in preparation for sidewalk installation

  • began pouring concrete for driveways

  • installed one curb ramp and most of the new sidewalk at the northwest corner of 15th Ave NW and NW Leary Way

Looking ahead, crews will continue:

  • pouring remaining concrete sidewalks at the bus stop

Eastbound NW Leary Way (east of 15th Ave NW)

Crews recently:

  • backfilled conduit trenches and graded in preparation for pouring sidewalk
  • poured concrete for foundations for the new bus stop features
  • poured concrete for the roadway panels and the curb at the bus stop

Looking ahead, crews will continue:

  • pouring concrete for new sidewalks

What's happening in Fremont?

Construction continues to advance in the Fremont area. While work is spread out throughout the neighborhood, there are a few crucial locations that crew members have focused their efforts on in the last few weeks. 

Eastbound 1st Ave NW and NW 36th St

Contractor crews recently completed:

  • demolition of the roadway and trenched for storm drain upgrades

Looking ahead, crews will:

  • complete storm drain installation
  • replace key sections of the roadway in front of bus bulb with full depth concrete panels
  • begin bus stop upgrades including replacing the sidewalk and installing a new bus bulb

Construction will continue throughout February and into March. Please follow pedestrian and traffic detour signs for your safety.

Transit riders, please note that the eastbound bus stop on NW 36th St between 1st Ave NW and Palatine Ave N (#28300) will be closed until Route 40 work is completed. Alternative stops can be found both east and west along N 36th St.

Westbound Fremont Pl N

Over the last few weeks, crews recently:

  • installed electrical conduits for the new bus stop
  • poured the concrete foundations for the bus stop features
  • began grading in preparation for the new sidewalk

Looking ahead, they will:

  • finish grading and pouring concrete sidewalks

Northwest corner and northeast corner of Fremont Ave N, Fremont Pl N, and N 35th St 

Crews recently completed:

  • concrete sidewalks and installed curb ramps at the northwest corner
  • demolition of the old curbs and graded in preparation for pouring sidewalk at the northeast corner

Looking ahead, crews will continue to:

  • pour curbs, sidewalks, and curb ramps at the northeast corner
  • replace sidewalk north of both corners on Fremont Ave N

N 35th East of Fremont Ave N

In late January and early February, crews:

  • poured concrete for the remaining sidewalk

Looking ahead, crews will continue to:

  • install and commission bus stop features, including a bus shelter, pedestrian lighting, and the real-time information system

Crews completed:

  • installing curbs, sidewalks, and curb ramps

Looking ahead, crews will complete:

  • one small panel of sidewalk and landscaping
