RapidRide J Line Header

Our RapidRide J Line project will make it easier and more convenient for you to get around the University District, Eastlake, South Lake Union, and Belltown. Whether you’re commuting to work, heading to class at the University of Washington, visiting the doctor, or shopping at local businesses, these upgrades will help you travel faster and more reliably.

As part of the project, we’ll upgrade streets, sidewalks, pedestrian ramps, streetlights, and traffic signals. We’ll also add protected bike lanes and replace the water main on Eastlake Ave E. These upgrades will support our local businesses, make it easier for you to get to housing, and help create safer, more connected neighborhoods for everyone. You can download maps of the final project using this link.

  • How to Stay Informed

We are working in many locations at once. Our work involves heavy machinery, loud noises, vibrations, and dust. We usually work from 7 AM to 5 PM, but we may start as early as 4 AM to allow enough time for new concrete to cure. We may also need to work weekends and nights to complete certain activities.

University District Construction

Electrical work and sidewalk installation on Roosevelt Way NE

Crews install new electrical lines.

Crews install new electrical lines.

Crews have begun installing new underground electrical utilities at the intersection of Roosevelt Way NE and NE 43rd St. Once this work is complete, we’ll restore the sidewalk.

A mixed-use path will be provided for pedestrians and bicyclists near the work area at Roosevelt Way NE and NE 42nd St.

The map above shows pick-up and drop-off locations, along with pedestrian detours, for accessing the UW Clinic during sidewalk construction. Click here to download a PDF of this map.

Crews are also continuing to install new electrical utilities and sidewalks on the west side of the intersection at Roosevelt Way NE and NE 42nd St near the UW Clinic. At least one southbound lane on Roosevelt Way NE will remain open during construction. However, as seen in the map above, we have closed part of the sidewalk near the UW Clinic. A path will be provided on the west side of Roosevelt Way NE. If you are riding your bike, we ask that you dismount and walk through the construction area using this path. The UW Clinic shuttle drop-off and pick-up area will be located on the north side of NE 42nd St. A non-shuttle pick-up and drop-off area will be located on the south side of the street. Please follow all signs and directions from crews.

Lastly, crews have started demolition to install new electrical utilities and sidewalks on the south side of NE 41st St, between Roosevelt Way NE and Eastlake Ave NE. This construction will require us to close the sidewalk on the south side of NE 41st St, and signage will guide you around the work area.

Sidewalk work on NE 43rd St and NE 42nd St

We expect to finish pouring concrete for new sidewalks at several locations next week. Crews will work on the south side of NE 43rd St between 11th Ave NE and 12th Ave NE, and pedestrians will be directed to the north side of the street during this construction. We’ll also install sidewalks on the southwest corner of 11th Ave NE and NE 42nd St. In this area, pedestrians will be detoured onto a path in the street, separated from traffic by a barrier.

Eastlake Construction

The map above shows where we are working in the Eastlake neighborhood.

Paving work is progressing along Eastlake Ave E

Crews pour new concrete for the curbs near E Lynn St.

We are making significant progress building a new, smooth, long-lasting road along Eastlake Ave E. Our crews are actively demolishing, preparing, and pouring new concrete in many areas:

  • Between Harvard Ave E and E Shelby St: Crews are pouring new concrete on the west side of Eastlake Ave E through to the end of February
  • Between E Shelby St and E Edgar St: As early as February 12, we will begin demolishing the east side of Eastlake Ave E. This will require us to shift traffic to the west side of the street. Please pay attention to all signage and flaggers when traveling on Eastlake Ave E.
  • Between E Edgar St and E Louisa St: We have started demolition on the east side of Eastlake Ave EDuring this street construction, the northbound Route 70 bus stop at Eastlake Ave E and E Louisa St will be moved south of the intersection. For more information on King County Metro’s bus stop relocations during construction, we encourage you to visit their website, the Route 70 page, and sign up for Transit Alerts.
    • Our team has coordinated with TOPS K-8 to minimize impacts on students and families. Wwill maintain access to the crosswalks at the intersection of E Louisa St and Eastlake Ave E. However, at least one crosswalk will be closed at the intersection of E Roanoke St and Eastlake Ave E during street construction. We plan to install new street panels across the intersections of E Roanoke St and E Louisa St outside of school hours and during their mid-winter break. This work is weather-dependent, so the team will alert TOPS if there are any unexpected issues that require a change to student drop-off and pick-up. Once completed, this street infrastructure will improve safety, accessibility, and the daily experience of students, families, and the surrounding community.
  • Between E Boston St and E Howe St: As early as February 12, we will begin demolishing the west side of Eastlake Ave E.
  • Between E Howe St and E Garfield St: We are demolishing the street on the west side of Eastlake Ave E. We expect to begin pouring concrete as soon as next Thursday, February 12.

Fairview Ave N Construction

Drainage work on Aloha St

On the southeast corner of Aloha St and Fairview Ave N, we will install drainage for rainwater. This work will begin as early as today, February 6, with crews demolishing the sidewalk and part of the street next to it. Pedestrians and traffic will be directed around the work area.

Sidewalk installation on Valley St

We have started restoring the sidewalk at the southeast corner of Valley St and Fairview Ave N. We expect to complete this work early next week. Signage will direct pedestrians to the other side of Fairview Ave N or to a safe route around the work area.

Sidewalk work on Harrison St

We will continue restoring the sidewalk for the bus shelter on the northeast corner of Harrison St and Fairview Ave N through mid-February. To maintain access to Fairview Market Hall’s southern entrance, we have installed a temporary ramp on the north side of Harrison St.
