Our RapidRide J Line project will make it easier and more convenient for you to get around the University District, Eastlake, South Lake Union, and Belltown. Whether you’re commuting to work, heading to class at the University of Washington, visiting the doctor, or shopping at local businesses, these upgrades will help you travel faster and more reliably.
As part of the project, we’ll upgrade streets, sidewalks, pedestrian ramps, streetlights, and traffic signals. We’ll also add protected bike lanes and replace the water main on Eastlake Ave E. These upgrades will support our local businesses, make it easier for you to get to housing, and help create safer, more connected neighborhoods for everyone.
Crews prepare Eastlake Ave E between E Galer St and E Garfield St for paving.

Here’s what is included in this email update:
- University District Construction
- Eastlake Construction
-
Fairview Ave N Construction
We are working in many locations at once. Our work involves heavy machinery, loud noises, vibrations, and dust. We usually work from 7 AM to 5 PM, but we may start as early as 4 AM to allow enough time for new concrete to cure. We may also need to work weekends and nights to complete certain activities.
University District Construction
Paving and bus stop closure on Roosevelt Way NE
We are demolishing and paving the west side of Roosevelt Way NE, between NE 41st St and NE 43rd St. One southbound traffic lane will remain open during this work, which is expected to last several weeks. If you are riding a bike, you may need to use the sidewalks in some areas during construction.
This work requires us to temporarily close the southbound bus stop near the UW Clinic at NE 42nd St and Roosevelt Way NE. It also requires us to move the UW Clinic’s shuttle bus pick-up and drop-off area to the north side of NE 42nd St.
Driveway and alley closures on Roosevelt Way NE and NE 43rd St
As early as 10 AM on Friday, November 7, we will pave the street in front of the alleys on NE 43rd St between 11th Ave NE and 12th Ave NE. Around 5 PM, we will begin paving the street in front of the garage at Trinity Apartments. All work will take place after trash pickup is complete.
Crews will remove existing road panels in front of the driveway and alleys, then pour new concrete that will set over the weekend. During this time, Trinity Apartments residents will not have access to their parking garage. Traffic will not be able to access the alleys from NE 43rd St. We will reopen both the parking garage and alleys before 6 AM on Monday. You should expect some construction noise during this work.
Electrical work and sidewalk installation on NE 43rd St
We are installing new electrical systems on the south side of NE 43rd St, between 11th Ave NE and Roosevelt Way NE. This work will involve demolishing the sidewalk, installing underground electrical lines, and constructing new sidewalks on top. We expect this process to take several more weeks. During this time, pedestrians will be directed to use the sidewalks on the north side of the street.
Electrical work and sidewalk installation on 11th Ave NE
Crews will install new electrical lines and pour sidewalks on the east side of 11th Ave NE and NE 42nd St throughout next week. We expect to finish this work as early as November 17. Once complete, crews will move to the northwest side of the intersection to repeat the process. Traffic will be directed around the work area, and signs will guide pedestrians safely through the zone.
We’ll also continue building new sidewalks along the east side of Eastlake Ave NE and 11th Ave NE. This work will take several weeks and require traffic shifts. Pedestrians will need to use the west sidewalk during this time.
Eastlake Construction

The map above shows where we are working in the Eastlake neighborhood. Click here to download a larger PDF of this map.
Paving work along Eastlake Ave E
Crews remove concrete between E Boston St and E Howe St.
You will continue to see major changes along Eastlake Ave E as crews demolish and repave sections of the street. On the north end, we will pour fresh concrete on the east side between Harvard Ave E and E Shelby St. We are also demolishing the east side of Eastlake Ave E between E Boston St and E Howe St. Please note that the northbound bus stop that is currently north of E Howe St will be relocated to the south between E Howe St and E Blaine St.
New pavement on Eastlake Ave E between E Garfield St and E Galer St.
On the west side of Eastlake Ave E, crews expect to finish pouring concrete between E Garfield St and E Galer St as early as November 12, before moving north to pour concrete between E Garfield St and E Blaine St.
Demolished concrete on Eastlake Ave E.
We will continue coordinating with property owners and residents to maintain driveway access. Traffic will be shifted to the opposite side of the street from where we’re working.
Electrical work at Eastlake Ave E and E Hamlin St
Crews fill the electrical trench before placing temporary pavement.
Crews will finish installing electrical lines at the intersection of E Hamlin St and Eastlake Ave E throughout next week. This work will involve backfilling the trench used to reach the underground utilities with temporary concrete. We will repave the street at a later date.
Water main replacement on Eastlake Ave E
We continue to install the new water main along the east side of Eastlake Ave E between E Edgar St and E Louisa St. During this time, we will shift traffic around the construction zones. Please note that the northbound bus stop on Eastlake Ave E, which is usually located north of E Louisa St, has been moved south between E Lynn St and E Louisa St.
Fairview Ave N Construction
Frontage road closure near Fairview Ave N and Yale Ave N
Crews continue to install new communication utility systems on the west side of Fairview Ave N, along the frontage road between Aloha St and Yale Ave N. Crews will be working at the intersections of Yale Ave N, Fairview Pl N, and Aloha St. This work will temporarily limit sidewalk access near Yale Ave N. Pedestrians and bicyclists will be directed onto the frontage road around the work area. Our work will take place on weekdays between 7 AM and 5 PM. We will reopen the affected areas at the end of each workday, and we do not expect any weekend work.
Installing drainage for storm water on Fairview Ave N
Over the next few weeks, crews will install drainage upgrades on the east side of Fairview Ave N between Valley St and Roy St. This will help collect water runoff and prevent debris from clogging underground pipes. To reduce impacts on daytime traffic, work will take place at night during the weekends of November 14 and 21. Traffic will be shifted around the work areas.
Bus shelter foundation installation at Aloha St
We begin installing new bus shelter foundations on the northeast corner of Aloha St as early as November 7. This is one of the first steps to adding our new RapidRide J Line bus shelters in the neighborhood! Our work will require us to remove the sidewalk, dig trenches several feet deep, and detour sidewalk users to the other side of the street. Please follow all signs and directions from crews near the work area.
Online Drop-In Sessions
Every Thursday from 2 to 3 PM, residents and business owners have been actively joining our online open house to connect with the project team and have their questions answered. These sessions have been a fantastic way for the community to engage directly, and we’ve received great feedback about how valuable and accessible they are. Whether you want to share your thoughts, ask questions, or simply listen, we encourage everyone to join us and be part of the conversation. Your input truly makes a difference!
