Our RapidRide J Line project will make it easier and more convenient for you to get around the University District, Eastlake, South Lake Union, and Belltown. Whether you’re commuting to work, heading to class at the University of Washington, visiting the doctor, or shopping at local businesses, these upgrades will help you travel faster and more reliably.

As part of the project, we’ll upgrade streets, sidewalks, pedestrian ramps, streetlights, and traffic signals. We’ll also add protected bike lanes and replace the water main on Eastlake Ave E. These upgrades will support our local businesses, make it easier for you to get to housing, and help create safer, more connected neighborhoods for everyone.

Here’s what is included in this email update:

  • Happy Halloween and Día de los Muertos!
  • University District Construction
  • Eastlake Construction
  • Fairview Ave N Construction

We are working in many locations at once. Our work involves heavy machinery, loud noises, vibrations, and dust. We usually work from 7 AM to 5 PM, but we may start as early as 4 AM to allow enough time for new concrete to cure. We may also need to work weekends and nights to complete certain activities.

Happy Halloween and Día de los Muertos from the RapidRide J Line Project!

The RapidRide J Line project team wishes everyone a Happy Halloween and Día de los Muertos! As festivities bring more people outside in our neighborhoods, we encourage everyone to stay alert and look out for one another on the streets. Please watch for trick-or-treaters, use crosswalks and sidewalks, travel slowly when driving, and do not enter construction areas. Thank you for helping keep our communities safe while we work!

University District Construction

Paving and bus stop closure on Roosevelt Way NE

We have started demolishing and paving the west side of Roosevelt Way NE between NE 41st St and NE 43rd St. One southbound traffic lane will stay open during this work, which is expected to last several weeks. If you are riding a bike, you may need to use the sidewalks in some areas during construction.

This work requires us to temporarily close the southbound bus stop near the UW Clinic at NE 42nd St and Roosevelt Way NE. Alternative stops are available at the following locations:

  • Southbound Roosevelt Way NE and NE 45th St (Stop #9605): Routes 31, 32, and 65
  • Westbound NE 42nd St and 8th Ave NE (Stop #5402): Routes 31 and 32
  • Eastbound NE Campus Pkwy and University Wy NE (Stop #9575): Route 65

Our work on the west side of Roosevelt Way NE also requires us to move the UW Clinic’s shuttle bus pick-up and drop-off area to the north side of NE 42nd St. Please see the map below for more details.

Driveway and alley closures rescheduled on Roosevelt Way NE and NE 43rd St

Due to inclement weather this weekend, we have rescheduled paving the street in front of the alleys on NE 43rd St between 11th Ave NE and 12th Ave NE. This work has been rescheduled to the weekend of November 7, after trash pickup is complete.

As early as 5 PM on Friday, November 7, crews will remove existing road panels in front of the driveway and alleys, then pour new concrete that will set over the weekend. During this time, Trinity Apartments residents will not have access to their parking garage. Traffic will also not be able to access the alleys from NE 43rd St. We will reopen both the parking garage and alleyways before 6 AM on Monday morning. You should expect some construction noise during this work.

Please note that this work may be delayed by poor weather. Crews will determine if temperatures and weather conditions are suitable for paving on the day of work.

Paving on Eastlake Ave NE

We expect to finish paving the west side of Eastlake Ave NE between NE Campus Pkwy and NE 41st St early next week. One northbound lane will continue to stay open during the remaining work.

As early as Friday, October 31, we will begin installing new sidewalks on the east side of Eastlake Ave NE and 11th Ave NE. This work will take several weeks to complete and require us to shift traffic around the area. Pedestrians will need to use the sidewalk on the west side.
