TODAY: Seattle Celebrates Swearing-In of SPD Chief Shon F. Barnes

Seattle – This afternoon, the Seattle Police Department (SPD) will celebrate the swearing-in of Chief Shon F. Barnes. As the 38th Chief of Police at SPD, Chief Barnes brings a new vision to the department at a time when the momentum continues to grow in recruiting while crime has decreased by about nine percent. Today, SPD is expanding with more than 90 recruits year-to-date.

On July 1, 2025, Chief Barnes was unanimously confirmed by Seattle City Councilmembers in a vote of 9-0. Councilmembers shared they are ready to work together to keep residents safe, drive meaningful accountability, establish new standards of professionalism, and build trust.

For Chief Barnes, this is a new opportunity to work together with the community for a safer Seattle.

“I am deeply honored and grateful for the opportunity to serve as Chief of Police for the Seattle Police Department. It is a privilege to lead the dedicated men and women of this department and to work in partnership with such a vibrant and resilient community,” he said.

Press interested in attending must RSVP to SPDNews@seattle.gov. Those unable to attend in person can watch a recording online via the Seattle Channel after the event.
