Water main work on 3rd Ave scheduled to start in late July 2025
Later this month, our crews (with help from Seattle Public Utilities) will begin replacing the 100-year-old water main line on 3rd Ave between Virginia St and Pine St.

When will we be doing this work?

On weekends we will work from 9 PM on Friday night through 5 AM on Monday morning

On weeknights we will work from 7 PM at night until 7 AM in the morning
What about water supply shutoffs?
Our crews will shut off the water supply in the area up to four times on weeknights and weekends. You can expect:

Two short shut offs that will last between two to four hours

Two longer shut offs that will last between eight to ten hours

Seattle Public Utilities will notify you and your neighbors five days before the water is shut off. To maintain water usage for residents and building tenants, a temporary waterline will be installed to provide water throughout the rest of the project timeline. We will reach out when we know more about the exact schedule of the shut offs. SPU will give your business 5-day advanced notice of any shut offs that may impact you.
What else can you expect?
We will also repave parts of 3rd Ave between Virginia St and Pine St while we replace the water main. To do this, we will:

Close at least one lane in the road

Temporarily close portions of the sidewalk on either side of the street

Temporarily close a crosswalk

Block access to some entrances or driveways
-
Temporarily close and move bus stops
You should also expect noise, dust, vibrations, and construction equipment around the work area while we work
Before we begin, we will share detour routes. We will continue to update our webpage and send emails with more information about the project schedule, construction activities, and what to expect during construction.
Upcoming Work Schedule
July 28-August 3
Between Stewart St and Virginia St

We will:
- Shift traffic from the west side of 3rd Ave to the east side between Stewart St and Virginia St
- Both lanes will remain open in either direction, though they will be slightly narrower as we are working within the parking lane

Cut open the concrete panels on the street

Demolish those concrete panels, exposing the water main
-
Install a temporary water main to maintain water service throughout the project
Paving Work:
3rd Ave, between Stewart & Virginia, East Curb Lane to the Center of the street

We will:
- Measure the street’s elevation and shape
3rd Ave, between Pine to Stewart, West Curb Lane to the Center

We will:
- Cut two concrete panels with a saw, which will help us remove them

Demolish those concrete panels

Ensure the street surface is level and even

Pour two new concrete panels
