Transforming empty spaces with community in mind
"To be a person of the tide, means you set the table for one another … You give away what you've received freely." – Matika Wilbur, Tidelands owner
Seattle Restored participants continue to highlight the importance of creating a new vision for the future while giving back to their communities. Meet Matika Wilbur, owner of Tidelands, the only Native-owned art gallery in Seattle. The Downtown gallery is a space for Native voices to share their art and stories. You’ll also see events like yoga classes, workshops, studio tapings, and more. Matika “designed the space as a reciprocal model, where each aspect supports the others.”
For Tony Wilson, Papa Tony’s is more than just hot sauces. Tony held a pop-up store as part of Seattle Restored’s expansion into Lake City featuring sauces and locally made products. Papa Tony’s also served as a community event space with business development workshops, spoken word open mics, and cooking classes. Tony wants people to have access to resources he didn’t have when he started his business.
Both Matika and Tony are creatively filling empty storefronts while intentionally giving back to their communities:
