A message from the Fire Chief

In April, we held an awards ceremony to honor the heroic actions of community members, and exemplary and courageous work of employees. This annual ceremony is an opportunity to recognize those who have a passion for service to others. I extend my deepest gratitude to the Seattle Fire Foundation and their generous sponsors for hosting this event and allowing Seattle Fire employees to attend at no cost.

This fall, Seattle Fire will open our application period for entry-level firefighter/EMT applicants. Those interested in a career with the SFD should join our interest list to stay updated on the hiring process and consider attending the upcoming King County Diversity and Recruitment Workshop on May 10. Register for the workshop on the King County Fire Chiefs Association website

We hope you will join us this weekend for two community events where families can participate in fire safety activities and meet local firefighters. On Saturday, May 3, we are hosting a Fire Safety Fair at Fire Station 30 in the Mount Baker neighborhood. Apparatus bay doors will be open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  After this event concludes, from 1 to 3 p.m. at all other fire stations in the City, we will open our doors for the annual Neighbor Day event. During this time frame, community members are welcome to stop by their local fire house to meet crew members and request a tour of the apparatus. Please note that our units will remain in service for responding to emergencies and there is a chance they will be on an emergency response and unable to accommodate visitors.

In May we honor Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander month, celebrate Mother's Day, International Firefighters' Day, Emergency Medical Services Week and Memorial Day. I hope you will join me in sharing appreciation with Seattle Fire personnel and those in our community who are recognized as part of these honors.

Stay safe,

Harold D. Scoggins, Fire Chief

Keeping you safe

Grilling safety

Outdoor grilling

Spring weather has finally arrived. This is the time of year when more outdoor grills are cleaned up and put to use. Whether using a grill on an apartment rooftop or in your backyard, consider these fire prevention and safety tips before lighting the grill. Most grill fires are preventable.

Prepare in advance for wildfire smoke

Wildfires

The quality of air we breathe is vital to our health. When wildfire smoke enters our region, the air quality can degrade quickly and be unhealthy for many. According to the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency, wildfire smoke carries the same health risks as wood smoke, except there can be a lot more of it. Prepare your home in advance before air filters, box fans and N95 masks are in short supply.

Neighbor Day May 3

This Saturday, Seattle Fire is welcoming the community into our stations with two events:
