Construction Update: Denny Way Paving Project
Upcoming work on Denny Way including lane closures
Construction is continuing on the Denny Way Paving Project. The project will pave almost 12 blocks of Denny Way to improve mobility and enhance the overall travel experience for residents and commuters alike. Work includes asphalt paving, sidewalk improvements, bus stop changes, new pedestrian ramps, curb bulbs that shorten crossing distances, new stop bars painted on the road, and new "no turn on red" signs.

Anticipated Work in the Week Ahead
In the coming weeks, you may notice new areas of construction along Denny between Taylor Ave and Westlake Ave. Our work will reduce the amounts of lanes on Denny Way and close some areas of the sidewalk. If you are travelling in the area, watch for changing traffic patterns, and follow any signs that direct you around work zones. Please note that Vine St will be closed until April 18.
Here are the additional details for our work in the coming weeks:
-
7th Ave and Dexter Ave – two eastbound lanes will close on Saturday, April 12 and reopen on Monday at 5 AM. We will move eastbound traffic into one westbound lane.
-
Dexter Ave and 9th Ave – will have two eastbound lanes closed between April 12 and April 13. Lanes will reopen at 7 PM each day. During this time, 8th Ave southbound will be closed during work hours and 8th Ave northbound will be closed and remain closed until late April. We will move eastbound traffic into a westbound lane.
-
7th Ave and 8th Ave – one eastbound lane will be closed during the day between April 14 and 15. You will also notice sidewalk closures as we build new pedestrian ramps.
-
Dexter Ave and 9th Ave – one eastbound lane will be closed between 9 AM to 3 PM between April 16 and April 17. One westbound lane will be closed between April 18 and April 20 during the day. Two lanes will be closed on the weekend with traffic being moved to other lanes.
-
9th Ave and Westlake Ave – two westbound lanes will be closed on the weekend of April 19 and 20. One lane will remain closed until Monday and will be reopened by 5 AM for the morning commute.
Another SDOT construction project will also be occurring at 8th Avenue and Denny Way. These crew members will be installing electrical components for traffic signals between 8th Ave and Dexter Ave N. They will work during nights over the next few weeks. If you have questions or concerns about this work, you can email the project team at TOUPCurbRamps@seattle.gov.
 What to Expect During Construction
Work will happen during the daytime and asphalt paving will primarily occur at night, from 7 PM to 6 AM, Monday through Friday. There will be occasional weekend work. During construction, there will be lane closures along Denny Way, but one lane in each direction will remain open at all times. Sidewalk closures will occur, though pedestrian access will be maintained. Lane closures may last for 2-3 weeks at a time, and work zones will cover a few blocks at a time. Click this link to view a PDF of the project map.
Initial work will begin on Denny Way between Taylor Ave and Dexter Ave. Our team will take out parts of the old sidewalk and parts of the road, check utility locations, and then pour new sidewalk, new concrete road sections, and build new ramps for pedestrians.
Things You Should Be Aware of During Construction
- Construction will create some short-term changes to your area, including:
- You may notice noise, dust, smell, and vibrations.
- You may need to change your walking route while we work on sidewalks, but we will provide signage for you to follow.
- Your business matters to us and we will provide advance notification of work and any impacts in person and provide you with a direct contact for questions. We will maintain access to your businesses at all times.
- You’ll notice asphalt paving work between 7 PM to 6 AM Monday-Friday with some daytime and possible weekend work when needed.
- Some of your parking and loading areas may shift near work zones but we are working at night to reduce these impacts.
- If you are traveling along Denny Way, you may need to switch lanes around work areas. Signage will guide you on your journey.
