Dear Community Members,

We are excited to share updates on the ongoing construction activities along the Route 40 Transit-Plus Multimodal Corridor Project. These enhancements are designed to improve transit reliability, pedestrian access, and overall street safety as we move forward.

What's Happening in Westlake?

Halladay St and Westlake Ave: In the upcoming weeks, crews will be working on backfilling and restoring the sidewalks near Halladay St. Crews completed the installation of a temporary lighting circuit to ensure safety and visibility while the underground conduits are being installed. Neighbors can expect to see temporary barricades around the new improvements—specifically in the parking lot—while we coordinate with our paving crews. We appreciate the community’s patience as crews advance work in this area.

Sidewalk Upgrades Near 8th Ave N and N Galer St: Demolition and upgrades are anticipated to continue through mid-April. Work includes renovations to the sidewalks at the intersection and extending north and south of 8th Ave N and N Galer St on the west side of Westlake Ave.

Aloha St and 9th Ave: Construction activities are set to begin at this location in the week of April 7, with crews performing trenching work for fiber optic conduits extending north along the west side of the parking lot adjacent to Westlake Ave. This work is expected to continue through April.

8th Ave N/Ward Street: Crews will conduct trenching work for electrical wiring for traffic signals, followed by the restoration of the roadway and sidewalk. This work is scheduled through April. Please be aware of potential temporary lane restrictions during this period to increase safety for people walking and rolling.

What's Happening in Ballard?

Crews are scheduled to begin work on new concrete median islands on Leary Ave NW near NW Ione Pl, NW Dock Pl, and 20th Ave NW in May. This work was initially scheduled to begin in April but has been rescheduled due to crew availability.

What's Happening in Fremont?

As part of the Route 40 enhancements, improvements in the Fremont neighborhood are expected to start in Spring 2025. We are committed to keeping the community informed and ensuring a smooth process for everyone relying on Route 40.

Stay tuned for more updates as we approach the construction dates and further developments!

Route 40 has over 8,500 average weekday daily boardings (Fall 2024) - an 11% increase from Fall 2023. It is the fifth (5th) highest ridership route in the Metro network.

Project Benefits

In addition to the 5-10% transit travel time savings, 14-17% in Ballard to Downtown, the Route 40 project will maintain and modernize vital infrastructure
