Construction updates for 15th Ave W/NW

April 3, 2025

Hello Neighbors,

We need to close the Ballard Bridge over several weekends this spring to finish work that was delayed because of rain last fall. We need the full closures to make sure we can work safely and efficiently on the Ballard Bridge and nearby Leary Way Bridge. This work is part of the 15th Ave W/NW & Ballard Bridge Paving & Safety Project.

We know these closures can be inconvenient and we appreciate your patience and understanding. We'll keep the bridge open for you to walk, bike, scoot, or roll except when it would be unsafe.

Work continues north of the Ballard Bridge on 15th Ave NW between NW Market St and NW Ballard Way. Crews are continuing seismic retrofit work on the Leary Way Bridge as well. On the night of April 12-13 and April 19-20, crews will be working at NW Market St to grind and overlay the asphalt roadway pavement. Read the construction section below to find out more.

As always, Ballard businesses are open during construction. Please support them by shopping locally!

Ballard Bridge weekend closure details

What to expect in April

The first weekend closure is scheduled for April 25-28.

  • On Friday, April 25: Lane closures may begin as early as 7 PM, and the bridge will fully close at 10 PM.  Additionally, 15th Ave NW will be fully closed in both directions between NW 51st St and NW 50th St during the Ballard Bridge closure for concrete roadway pavement restoration.
  • On Monday, April 28: The bridge will reopen by 5 AM.

What to expect later this spring

We’ve scheduled additional weekend closures on these dates:

  • May 9-12*
  • May 30-June 2*
  • June 6-9
  • We also have backup dates of June 13-16 and July 18-21, if needed due to inclement weather.

* 15th Ave NW will be fully closed in both directions between NW 51st St and NW 50th St during this Ballard Bridge closure for concrete roadway pavement restoration.

We’ll confirm the backup closure dates in advance as we complete our plans. The timing of each closure will be the same, from Friday evening through Monday morning.

Please note: These dates and times may change due to weather conditions or other unexpected circumstances. Bridge closure cancellations may be rescheduled to new dates in addition to those listed above if weather doesn’t cooperate. We encourage you to share this information with your neighbors, co-workers, family members, and friends who live, work, and play along or near the 15th Ave W/NW corridor.  Sign up here for email updates to stay informed.

Getting around during the closure

People walking and riding bikes

  • You can walk or bike across the Ballard Bridge on the sidewalk while it’s closed to drivers.
  • You may be asked to walk your bike for safety reasons.
  • You may also be detoured to a different side of the bridge for safety reasons.

Drivers and freight

  • If you are driving, please use the Aurora Bridge (SR 99) as the most reliable detour route.
  • You are recommended to only use the Fremont Bridge if you’re traveling to Fremont or Westlake, due to that bridge’s limited capacity.
  • You may see detour signs around the Ballard Bridge to help guide you to alternative travel routes during the closures. Please detour to other routes before you reach the Ballard Bridge.

Bus riders

  • You should expect longer bus trips because buses that normally use the Ballard Bridge may be rerouted to the Fremont Bridge.
  • Please be aware that some bus stops near the Ballard Bridge may be temporarily relocated to support the closures.

Boaters

  • If you’re traveling by boat, you can continue to travel under the Ballard Bridge.
  • Please be aware of your surroundings to ensure everyone’s safety while traveling by boat.

Other ways to travel

While the bridge is closed, consider the options listed below to get around. You can also shop local – Ballard businesses are open during construction. Here are a few travel options:

  • Walking and rolling: These are great options for shorter trips, depending on your destination.
  • Flip your trip: Visit FlipYourTrip.org to learn about different ways to get around.
  • RideshareOnline: If you need to drive, consider carpooling. Check out RideshareOnline serving Washington and Oregon to find carpool and vanpool options.

Project coordination

We are working together across several construction projects in the area to help you get around and reduce travel impacts as much as possible.

Construction on 15th Ave NW

Weekend overnight work on April 12 - 13 and April 19 - 20

We are planning asphalt grinding and paving at NW Market St. This work is scheduled for weekend nights on April 12 - 13 and April 19 - 20 from 7 PM – 6 AM. At least one driving lane will be open in each direction. Dates and times could change due to weather or other factors.

Crews continue to work along 15th Ave NW between NW Market St and NW Ballard Way. This construction will upgrade ADA accessible ramps, rebuild sidewalk corners, install upgraded traffic signals and cameras, improve storm drainage, and repair the sidewalk and roadway in select areas. Crews are continuing to make progress on the landscape median work between NW 50th St and NW 54th St.

Crews are also continuing work to strengthen and improve earthquake safety on the Leary Way Bridge. There will be partial sidewalk and lane closures related to this work. Driving lanes between NW 51st St and Ballard Way NW will continue to be restricted to demolish and build new concrete roadway panels.

What to Expect

  • Construction is typically scheduled Mondays – Fridays from 7 AM – 5 PM.
  • We will close driving lanes on 15th Ave NW near work areas and on NW Leary Way beneath and near the bridge. The inside driving lanes on 15th Ave NW between NW 50th St and NW 54th St will be closed. There will always be at least one lane open in each direction.
  • We will close the sidewalk in work areas. There will be detour signs in place to direct you around construction.
  • We will close streets to thru traffic as needed between 17th Ave NW and 14th Ave NW. You will still be able to walk, roll, bike, or drive to businesses and homes on these streets.
  • We may temporarily move bus stops for the D Line at 15th Ave NW and NW Market St and the D Line and Route 40 and 17 at 15th Ave NW and NW Leary Way. Please see signs at bus stops for new locations and/or sign up for transit alerts.
  • We will temporarily change parking in some areas for construction staging and traffic control near work sites.
