What's happening now?

Dear Community Members,

Construction continues along Westlake Ave as part of the Route 40 Transit-Plus Multimodal Corridor Project. These upgrades will improve transit reliability, pedestrian access, and street safety.

What's Happening in Westlake?

  • Sidewalk Upgrades Near 8th Ave N and N Galer St There will be demolition and upgrades to the sidewalks at the intersection and to the north and south of 8th Ave N and N Galer St on the west side of Westlake Ave. This work was originally scheduled for February but was rescheduled due to weather.
    • Please expect detours for pedestrians and wheelchair users, along with temporary lane restrictions. Lane restrictions for traffic will occur intermittently through early May.
    • This work is tentatively scheduled to take around two weeks, although underground conflicts may cause change to the timeline. We plan to maintain crosswalk access.
  • Preparing for construction at Aloha St/9th Ave Crews are expected to start in this location as early as March 20. The work consists of trenching fiber optic conduits from the intersection running north along the west side of the parking lot on the east side of Westlake Ave.

What's Happening in Fremont?

Thank you to the Fremont Neighborhood Council for hosting the Route 40 team and for the thoughtful discussion about the project! We appreciate the opportunity to connect with the community and hear your insights on business and parade impacts, bike lanes, and public space enhancements.

As part of this project, improvements in the Fremont neighborhood are scheduled to begin in Spring 2025. We look forward to continuing to work together to keep the community informed and ensure a smooth process for everyone who relies on Route 40.

Stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to construction!

Route 40 Ridership is on the Rise

Route 40 has over 8,500 average weekday daily boardings (Fall 2024) - an 11% increase from Fall 2023. It is the fifth (5th) highest ridership route in the Metro network.

Project Benefits

In addition to the 5-10% transit travel time savings, 14-17% in Ballard to Downtown, the Route 40 project will maintain and modernize vital infrastructure
