Message from the Fire Chief
Four of our members deployed with a King County Strike Team in January to the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles, California. They have since returned home safely after 18 days away from their loved ones. I am incredibly grateful for their hard work and dedication to helping others in a time of great need.
On Jan. 28, we closed our open application window for lateral firefighter-paramedic positions. Those hired through the lateral process will help to bolster our paramedic staffing levels. On Feb. 12, we will welcome new members to the department as part of Recruit Class 122. They will begin our rigorous 16-week recruit school, which requires both mental perseverance and physical resilience. I wish them well on their journey towards becoming full-fledged firefighter/EMTs with the SFD.
In February we celebrate Black History Month. The SFD recently honored retired Fire Chief Claude Harris by creating an award in his name. The Fire Chief Claude Harris award is given to an individual who advances racial equity and social justice in the department and community. This month we also recognize American Heart Month. I encourage you to take a hands-only or certification CPR and choking intervention class through our Medic 2 program. These skills may be needed when you least expect it to save someone close to you.
Stay safe,
Harold D. Scoggins, Fire Chief

SFD deploys personnel to wildfires in California
We are proud to have sent four firefighters to assist with the massive wildfires near Los Angeles last month. They joined 200 other firefighters from Washington in helping protecting homes, patrolling for hot spots and mopping up behind the fire front.
Our deepest appreciation to Captain Vance Anderson, Captain Brian Anderson, Lt. Jake Desmarteau and Firefighter Jared Becker for being willing to serve our West Coast neighbors.
Eighteen days on the road serving communities in grave risk - away from family and working lengthy shifts without the certainty of where they would get rest and meals - is no small task. Thank you for your service on behalf of the Seattle Fire Department and Washington fire service.

Learn about SFD's Whole Blood program
January was National Blood Donor Month, and we featured our whole blood program on social media. Seattle Fire was one of the first fire and EMS agencies in the nation to implement a whole blood program.
Our medical services officer position carries several pints of O whole blood in a cooler, and when called to a scene involving a hemorrhaging patient, they can utilize it.

February is Heart Month
Seattle Fire Department’s Medic 2 bystander CPR training program is excited to announce a partnership with Seattle Parks and Recreation to host community CPR classes at community centers throughout the city.
Medic 2 hosts community CPR classes every month for individuals to attend. Typically, the classes are held exclusively at Seattle Fire headquarters in Pioneer Square. This partnership allows us to host community CPR classes at different locations in the city, making them more accessible for everyone.
In a Medic 2 CPR class, you will learn potentially life-saving skills of how to perform CPR, use an AED and choking intervention techniques.
February’s community CPR classes are as listed:
- Rainier Community Center – Saturday, Feb. 8, 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
- Seattle Fire Department Headquarters – Sunday, Feb. 9, 9-11:30 a.m.
- Dakota Place Park – Monday, Feb. 10, 5:15-7:45 p.m.
- Seattle Fire Department Headquarters – Wednesday, Feb. 26, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Sign up for a class by filling out the CPR training form on our website.
For more information about Medic 2, or to schedule a CPR class for a group, organization or business in the City of Seattle, email Medic2@Seattle.gov.
