3rd Ave S and S Main St. Bus Stop Improvements Project Updates
Valuable community input informed final design
The design phase of the project is complete. Thank you to the public and Pioneer Square businesses for co-creating the design of this important project. Construction will begin in Fall 2024. Future emails will share construction information so you can know what to expect. We will also regularly share what work has been completed in future emails. Plus, you can always visit our 3rd Ave S and S Main St webpage for the latest information.

With this new design, we maintain smoother two-way travel, create more space for pedestrians and transit riders, and give the area a sense of place within Pioneer Square’s art scene. Key highlights that we will include:
-
Reconstruct the roadway with concrete pavement between Yesler Way S and S Washington St and the southbound curb lane between S Washington St and S Main St
-
Widen the sidewalk on the west side of the street between S Washington St and S Main St, adding more lighting, bus stop amenities, art, and trees
-
Relocate parking on 3rd Ave S to S Washington and S Main streets. This requires converting a bus layover zone and bus stop to on-street parking and loading zones
-
Expand the load zone on the east side of 3rd Ave S, just south of S Washington St
-
Left turns onto S Main St. Are maintained
Stay tuned for more information
Now that the design is complete, we will work to secure a contractor to complete the work. Once we have more information (e.g., what detours will look like, and how long construction will last), we will send an email update. Construction is being coordinated with the Waterfront Seattle’s work to build better pedestrian connections to the neighborhood. Additionally, the 3rd Avenue & Yesler Safety Improvements Project (which begins construction in August 2024) will help provide safer connections through Downtown to Pioneer Square.
Thank you for your interest and for your input during our design process.
