Director's Note—May 2024

This month, as we honor Older Americans Month, I’m proud to highlight the essential work of our Human Services Department’s Aging and Disability Services (ADS) division. ADS ensures that older people and individuals with disabilities, as well as their family caregivers, throughout Seattle and King County receive the support they need to maintain stable health and age in place.

May is also Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month and is an opportunity to celebrate the diversity and contributions of our community. Enjoy events in our city to learn, engage and have fun. As a second-generation Korean American with two Korean/Filipino adult children, I assure you the AAPI community is not a monolith. Here is a sampling of community gems to learn more about history, community, and policy/data: Wing Luke Museum, Asia Pacific Cultural Center, and WA State Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs.

Finally, I’m excited to amplify One Seattle Day of Service which takes place on Saturday, May 18. This day embodies the values of inclusion, cooperation, and service championed by Mayor Bruce Harrell’s vision for One Seattle.

With over 2,500 volunteer shifts available at more than 110 events throughout Seattle, there are opportunities for everyone to participate, regardless of age or ability. See you there!

This May, as we celebrate Older Americans Month, AAPI Heritage Month, and the One Seattle Day of Service, let’s practice our commitment to building an inclusive, equitable, and compassionate city for all people.

In community,

Tanya Kim
