Ballard Bridge weekend closures – stay tuned for more details 

The Ballard Bridge will be closed on select weekends this summer and early fall while we replace worn expansion joints to keep the bridge resilient and strong. We will also complete some repairs and reinforcement on the Leary Way Bridge (which connects the Ballard Bridge to the Ballard neighborhood). This work will strengthen the existing bridge and make it safer in the event of an earthquake.  

We understand closing this major crossing at any time is a disruption to travelers.  As we work with our construction contractor to determine the closure dates, we will do our best to: 

• Avoid closing the bridge to people walking, rolling, or biking unless absolutely necessary
• Try not to schedule closures during major summer fairs and festivals in Ballard 
• Attempt to avoid overlapping closures with other construction projects on potential detour routes  
• Not disrupt weekday school and work commutes  

We understand that bridge closures are especially difficult for people walking or riding bikes. Once the bridge closure dates and detour routes are finalized, we’ll share them widely so everyone can plan ahead. Reminders will also be sent out ahead of each weekend bridge closure. 

Preparing for construction 

Before major construction can start, our contractor may do some prep work like moving equipment and materials into the project corridor. The contractor may also shift traffic when needed so there are safe work zones for crews and clear navigation for the traveling public. We will provide more details as they are available.  

Construction Timeline 

Construction is anticipated to start as early as June 2024 . We are planning for the bridge closures to happen over several weekends in 2024. Construction focused on other parts of 15th Ave NW than the Ballard Bridge will continue through 2025. We will be sure to provide the public with as much notice as possible if any additional full closures are scheduled in a later phase of construction.
