Greetings Neighbors,

We are excited to announce that the Route 40 Transit Plus Multimodal Corridor project contractor has been selected! We advertised to contractors on December 22, 2023, and we will be moving forward with Jansen Inc., a contractor that has built many important transit projects in Seattle over the last few years. This means that we are one step closer to providing fast, reliable, and safe transit for our growing communities, testing an innovative freight and bus lane, and replacing a 100-year-old water main in Fremont. To learn more about our major projects, read ourblog.

Key Project Benefits

  • 3 total miles of Business Access and Transit (BAT) lanes to make right turns easier and keep traffic moving as buses make their stops
  • A pilot using Freight and Bus (FAB) lanes to keep large trucks and transit moving
  • 5-10% transit travel time reductions
  • 47 upgraded ADA-accessible curb ramps
  • 8 new bus bulbs (for safer, more convenient boarding and shorter street crossings for pedestrians)
  • 6,000+ feet of upgraded sidewalks
  • New watermain in Fremont
  • Improved or new traffic signals in select locations

Working with the community

Thank you again to the community members who have continued to help shape the Route 40 project and contributed to the design of high-quality street improvements. We’ve conducted surveys, hosted briefings, and been in the community to gather feedback.

Outreach to date

  • 40+ briefings with community groups, property and business owners, and advisory boards
  • 20+ email updates
  • 2 online open houses
  • 7 door to door outreach activities with business owners and neighbors
  • 9 tabling events along the project corridor
  • 6 surveys with riders and community members

To learn more about all the outreach we’ve done the past three years, read here. We’re not done. More outreach activities for preconstruction will be announced soon!

Over the past two months, we have received an incredible amount of support from neighbors through over 7,000 emails to our project team and city leadership. Additionally, we’ve continued to meet with neighborhood organizations and business owners along the corridor to begin preparing for construction. We have heard a few concerns and are committed to observing and evaluating the project after implementation.

We appreciate your continued engagement in guiding our efforts and we are committed to delivering this important project to your community soon!

Preparing for construction

Reminder - we want to hear from you in our preconstruction survey! We hope to understand how neighbors, visitors, and business owners get around their neighborhoods and see how we can coordinate with you. Your engagement is a key part of the preconstruction and construction process. We appreciate your time and thoughts!

Route 40 is one of the highest ridership routes in the city and also one of the 7 transit projects selected to be built through the Levy to Move Seattle, forming the transit network needed to support growth and good travel options for getting to work, home, and play. This project, along with RapidRide J in Eastlake and RapidRide G on Madison St, is recognized as a top priority by state and federal agencies. The recognition has resulted in Seattle receiving millions of dollars in transit grants to support the construction of these projects, acknowledging their value in enhancing bus ridership. Meeting the funding obligations and deadlines ensures the continued success of supplementing Seattle's transportation budget and maximizing the use of local funds.

Please visit our project webpage to learn more about the project, final design plans, outreach summaries, and a new FAQ document responding to concerns we’ve heard from neighbors. We also recently attended a Fremont Neighborhood Council meeting and shared a presentation with the community. You can find the presentation here.
