Director's Note—January 2024

Happy new year to everyone in the Seattle human services community— clients, providers, other community partners, staff, and city leaders.

Good news—HSD recruitment for a Deputy Director will begin in a few days. We’ll send a special notice to our newsletter subscribers that you can share with your networks.

January is National Human Trafficking Prevention Month. Human trafficking is happening everywhere—here in Seattle, across the country, and around the world. Our department’s Safe and Thriving Communities division, which provides community safety and victim support, is particularly tuned in to consequences of this large and rapidly growing underground economy—abuse, violence, poverty, instability, social isolation and discrimination that disproportionately affects immigrants, refugees, women, transgender individuals, people of color, youth, and members of the LGBTQ+ community.

This awareness month provides an opportunity for each one of us to learn more about the topic and support greater awareness. Please see U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ 2024 Human Trafficking Prevention Month Toolkit. Note upcoming weekly themes about activating connections—to promote individual health, family health, community health, and societal health and well-being.

If you suspect someone of trafficking or believe someone may be trafficked, you can call the 24/7 National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888 to report it. You can also contact the hotline for resources and training.

In community,

Tanya Kim
