Electrical Fire Safety

Overloaded outlets and the misuse of extension cords are common electrical issues that can cause a home fire. Before plugging in your new coffee maker or toaster oven, make sure to take a few simple measures to stay safe.

Safety tips:

  • Small appliances, like the toaster or coffee maker should be unplugged when not in use
  • Use as few cord adapters and extension cords as possible. Instead use a power strip that has a surge protector
  • Extension cords should only be used for temporary use. They should not be tacked to walls or run under rugs
  • Check your electrical cords. If they are cracked or damaged, replace them. Don’t try to repair them
  • Don’t overload extension cords or wall outlets
  • Never use extension cords with appliances. Plug them directly into wall outlets

Call a qualified electrician or the landlord if you experience any of the following:

  • Frequent problems with blowing fuses or tripping circuit breakers
  • A tingling feeling when you touch an electrical appliance
  • Discolored or warm wall outlets
  • A burning or rubbery smell coming from an appliance
  • Flickering or dimming lights
  • Sparks from an outlet

Staying safe with candles and incense

According to the National Fire Protection Association, there are on average 20 candle-related fires each day in the U.S. and approximately one-third (37%) of home candle fires start in bedrooms. As you continue to enjoy winter festivities, please pay special attention to the following to keep everyone safe.

  • When possible, use flameless battery-powered candles — they can look and smell like real candles
  • Keep candles and incense at least 12 inches from anything that can burn
  • Candleholders should be heat resistant, sturdy and large enough to contain any drips or melted wax and won’t tip over easily
  • Place candle and incense holders on a sturdy, uncluttered surface where they won’t be knocked over
  • Blow out all candles and extinguish incense before you leave a room and before you go to bed
  • Keep candles, incense, matches and lighters out of reach of children and pets
  • Don’t burn a candle all the way down — put it out before it gets too close to the holder or container
  • Avoid the use of candles and incense in the bedroom and other areas where people may fall asleep
  • Always have a flashlight with batteries handy in case of a power outage
