Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell, Sound Transit CEO Julie Timm, SDOT Director Greg Spotts, and more gathered for the groundbreaking of the MLK Jr Way Safety Project at Sam Smith Park
Your Levy dollars have been hard at work this year. Here is a roundup of recent blog posts that highlight a few of the many projects around town that Levy dollars have made possible.
-
We have completed the final design of the RapidRide J Line! In the coming months, we’ll advance the process of selecting a contractor and begin preparations for construction, which is expected to begin in summer 2024.
- We’re taking your commute to the next level! Once the RapidRide J Line project is complete, expect a smoother bus ride and more walkable neighborhood with upgraded sidewalks, signals, and curb ramps from Downtown to the U District.
- Enjoy more reliable travel times with new transit lanes and bus signal priority. New stations will enhance your wait, featuring shelters, lights, real-time updates, and all-door boarding. We’re also boosting connections to Link light rail, other bus lines, and Seattle Streetcar.
- And guess what? We’re going green, reducing carbon footprints by providing more travel options. For people who bike, we’re installing protected bike lanes for more comfortable and safe travel.
- We’re even paving Eastlake Ave E with 12 inches of concrete for a 50-year-long street life!
- Plus, we’re teaming up with Seattle Public Utilities to give Eastlake Ave E a watermain makeover.

- It was a busy summer for safety in Seattle as we advanced designs or started construction on several exciting bike lane and safety projects around the city.
- We also expanded several important programs aimed at achieving our Vision Zero goal to end traffic deaths and serious injuries on our streets.
- These projects are made possible thanks to Seattle voters passing the Levy to Move Seattle in 2015. Your Levy dollars are hard at work building new protected bike lanes, calming traffic, improving pedestrian signals and crossings, and more.

- On Friday, October 6, 2023, we broke ground on the MLK Jr Way Safety Project.
- The project will add a mile of protected bike lanes to MLK Jr Way S in addition to ADA improvements, wider sidewalks and crosswalks, upgraded crossings, and vehicle lane reductions to calm traffic and prioritize safe walking and rolling in this high-injury corridor.
- This project is guided by our Vision Zero Top to Bottom Review and the USDOT’s Safe System Approach to help us achieve our commitment to ending traffic deaths and serious injuries on Seattle streets.
- We celebrated this milestone with a ceremony at Sam Smith Park, where we heard from City leaders and partners including Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell, Sound Transit CEO Julie Timm, SDOT Director Greg Spotts, and Franklin High School Principal Erik Weiss.
- Construction on the MLK Jr Way Safety Project is expected be completed by late 2024.
