Construction Updates

Channelization and Striping in Downtown

We’re wrapping up most of our work downtown and will begin applying final pavement markings next week. Starting tonight, August 30 at 7 PM, we will begin installing stop bars, crosswalks, lane lines, and bus lane and bike lane markings on:

  • Spring St between 1st Ave and 6th Ave
  • Madison St between 1st Ave and 3rd Ave
  • 1st Ave between Spring St and Madison St
  • 6th Ave between Spring St and Madison St

This work will occur at night and is expected to last 3-4 weeks. During this work, people should expect short term lane closures. Some driveways will be temporarily impacted, and we are contacting those properties individually.

Below is a map illustrating the area where this work will take place:

Detours and Closures

Eastbound E Madison St remains closed between 12th and 19th Avenues. The closure is extended through October.

We’re making progress on the remaining road work on E Madison St between 12th Ave and 19th Ave. The current eastbound road closure and detour is expected to continue through October. Portions of E Madison St between 12th Ave and 19th Ave may start opening to both eastbound and westbound traffic prior to October as areas are completed.

Map showing closure of E Madison St between 12th -19th avenues with traffic detoured onto E Union St at 12th

(Above) Eastbound E Madison St is closed between 12th and 19th Avenues. Eastbound traffic is detoured onto East Union St at 12th Avenue, before turning left at 19th Avenue and rejoining Madison St.

The sidewalk is closed at the SW corner of Madison St and Boren Ave

The crosswalks across Madison St and Boren St on the west and south sides of the of the intersection are closed while we install underground utilities for signal and lighting upgrades. People should follow the signed pedestrian detour and not walk in traffic lanes around the work area. We are unable to provide a protected pedestrian walkway at this corner because the full width of the street is needed for buses to turn from Madison to Boren at this intersection.

9th Ave is currently closed between Spring and Madison streets because of a building fire

We have paused most of our work on 9th Ave due to an emergency street closure. During this emergency street closure, our contractor will repave the intersection at Spring St and 9th Ave. This work requires some short-term closures of 9th Ave at the intersection and directional closures of Spring St between 9th St and Terry Ave. Access to the Virginia Mason Hospital will be maintained at all times. The contractor plans to resume other road work on 9th Ave once the street is reopened, including the temporary southbound closure of 9th Ave.

Other closures and detours can sometimes occur due to unforeseen circumstances. We will send emails about any major closures and detours with specific information about closure impacts and traffic reroutes if they occur.

What We've Been Working On

Construction crews pour and grade concrete

Crews pouring concrete for the new roadway on E Madison St

We continue to make steady progress and thank everyone for their continued patience during construction. In an homage to the beautiful nature in our state, here’s what we accomplished in the month of July.

  • We've built 4,584 square yards of cement roadway and sidewalk. This is equal to 2.6 miles, the same length as the Heybrook Lookout hike in the Mount Baker Snoqualmie National Forest.
  • We've removed 3,101 square yards of existing pavement. This is equivalent to 1.8 miles, the same length as the Marymere Falls hike in Olympic National Park.
  • We've laid 4,771 feet if conduit for signals, street lighting, and electrical services - that's 571 feet longer than the height of the tallest waterfall in the continental United States (also in our very own North Cascades National Park).
  • We've built 1,128 feet of cement concrete curbing which is about 6 times the height of the Quinault giant Sitka spruce (the tallest Sitka spruce in the world!)

Construction of the project is about 65% complete! We’ll continue to share information on our progress and will update our estimated percent complete number later this fall. We expect construction to be complete by summer 2024.

King County Metro Bus Stop Closures & Relocations

Remember to take Metro's survey about the Madison St bus service changes! This survey is open through August 31. You can find more information about Metro's latest plan on their website.

As construction continue, we will need to temporarily reroute buses or close and relocate bus stops. These detours and closures can change frequently. Please visit King County Metro's Transit Alert page for the most accurate information, and sign up for Metro Transit Alerts. Metro Alerts are the best way to stay up to date on bus reroutes and impacts to bus stops.

Transit Alerts

Route 8 reroute in Madison Valley

Later in September, we expect Route 8 bus will be rerouted in Madison Valley because of road construction at E Madison St and Martin Luther King Jr Way. It is likely that the reroute to remain through October.

Route 11 and 12 reroutes between 12th Ave and 19th Ave

Routes 11 and 12 continue to be rerouted between 12th Ave and 19th Ave for ongoing paving and roadwork. We expect these reroutes to continue through the end of October. We are working to complete road work in this area as efficiently as possible in order to reopen impacted bus stops.

Did you know? You can also use mapping tools like google maps to plan your bus trip and stay informed of bus stop closures and relocations. When you enter your trip, google will alert you if there are any bus stop closures on your route, including locations of relocated stops.
