Paddle to Muckleshoot: A Celebratory and Ceremonial Healing Experience
On Sunday, July 30, as many as 120 Indigenous, First Nation, and Alaska Native canoe families made the journey from their homelands across the ancestral highways of the sea, just as their ancestors had since time immemorial, to gather at Alki Beach. Many elders were scattered across the beach in their lounge chairs with their toes in the sand, smiling out at the water, welcoming each canoe family as the canoes rowed in. After arriving at the shores, a weeklong traditional potlatch ceremony is held on the host nation’s land, where the families enjoy song, dance, gifts, and shared meals provided by the host nation.

Community is Invited to the First Annual Iu Mien Festival on August 13
As a vibrant and resilient community that has proudly called the King County area home for 43 years, the Iu Mien community has often felt unseen and overlooked. Never before have they had the privilege of hosting a public event that would allow them to authentically showcase their rich heritage and unique experiences. The Iu Mien Cultural Festival, made possible by the generous sponsorship of Washington State Parks, is a milestone for the Iu Mien community. It not only amplifies the voice of the Iu Mien people but also provides a platform to share their culture with the wider public. The Iu Mien Festival will take place on August 13, from 9am-6pm at Saltwater State Park in Des Moines.

South Park’s Marra-Desimone Park Provides Seed to Grow Community
The Seattle neighborhood of South Park is located on the west bank of the Duwamish River. In the middle of the neighborhood is hidden gem Marra-Desimone Park, a thriving farm reflecting the diverse cultures of the neighborhood and providing recreational opportunities for all. The urban farm is one of only two historic agricultural parcels within Seattle city limits still used as active farmland, supported by community volunteers and nonprofit organizations.
