We have switched to monthly email updates. We’re writing with important construction updates in advance of our next monthly email update at the end of July. Please read below, and contact us with any questions.

Milling & Paving in Downtown

Starting as soon as July 12 at 7 PM, we will begin milling and paving sections of Spring St, Madison St, 6th Ave, 7th Ave, and 10th Ave. We expect the work to be completed within 4 weeks. The work includes grinding off the top layer of the street and then repaving the street with a new layer of asphalt. This work is happening on sections of the street that have not already been repaved with concrete.

Milling will occur at night from July 12 – 14 and July 17. Paving will also occur at night and is expected to begin as soon as July 31. Once paving is completed, we’ll start applying final street markings, including new red bus lanes on Spring St and Madison St later this summer.

Milling and paving will occur on*:

  • Spring St between 1st Ave and 9th Ave
  • Madison St between 1st Ave and 3rd Ave
  • 6th Ave between Spring St and Madison St
  • 7th Ave at the intersections of Spring St and Madison St
  • 10th Ave between E Madison St and E Union St

*We’ll be back to mill and pave other locations in the spring. We’ll share more information in future email updates.

There will be travel lane reductions throughout this work

  • Spring St will be reduced to one travel lane between 1st Ave and 9th Ave. The contractor will open some additional lanes near the I-5 on-ramp to help keep traffic moving.
  • Madison St will be reduced to one lane between 1st Ave and 3rd Ave. Madison St is currently reduced to two lanes between 3rd Ave and 4th Ave, which is expected to remain through milling and paving.
  • 6th Ave will be reduced to two lanes between Spring St and Madison St. It will temporarily be down to one lane when crews are actively milling the street.
  • Access to the I-5 on ramp from Spring St and 6th Ave will be maintained with possible short-term disruptions during milling. There may be nighttime access impacts to the I-5 on-ramp during paving. We’ll have more information about impacts to the I-5 on-ramp during paving in our next email update.
  • 10th Ave will be closed between E Union St and Seneca St while crews are actively milling or paving the street. We expect these closures to last up to 4 hours at a time.

People driving are encouraged to allow for extra travel time and consider taking alternative routes to avoid increased traffic congestion. People can use Marion St, Cherry St, or James St to access I-5. Bicyclists and motorcyclists should use extreme caution when traveling through the work areas and watch for uneven pavement.

What to expect

  • Crews will be actively milling and paving at night to reduce impacts to people driving and access to driveways and alleys. Milling and paving is expected to occur from 7 PM – 6 AM. The contractor has obtained a nighttime noise variance.
  • Noise, dust, and vibrations
  • Travel lane reductions (described above)
  • Temporary nighttime access restrictions to driveways, garages, and alleyways. Access restrictions are expected to last for up to 30 minutes during milling and up to 4 hours during paving, although this can vary. Impacted properties are being notified.
  • Temporary impacts to bus stops when crews are actively milling and paving. Sign up for Metro Alerts for the most up to date information on impacts to bus stops and bus routes.
  • Sidewalks and crosswalks will remain open. There may be short term crosswalk closures when crews are actively working at intersections.

King County Metro Bus Stop Closures & Relocations

As construction activities continue, buses get re-routed and bus stops on the project corridor will temporarily close or relocate as needed. Bus stop closures and relocations change frequently. We understand that changes and impacts to bus routes and bus stops due to construction is difficult. We’re working closely with our partners at King County Metro to reduce impacts to bus riders and provide people with the information they need to get where they need to go on the bus. The best way to stay informed on changes to bus routes or bus stops is to sign up for King County Metros Transit Alerts

Transit Alerts

Below is information about some of the more significant bus reroutes in the project area. This information is subject to change, and people should always refer to King County Metro for the latest information.

Need accessible bus service? Eligible people can book a trip through Metro’s Access Transportation program

Route 8 reroute in Madison Valley

The Route 8 bus is currently rerouted in Madison Valley because of road construction at E Madison St and Martin Luther King Jr Way. We expect the reroute to remain through the end of August. People taking the Route 8 bus eastbound to the Madison Valley business district can transfer to the eastbound Route 11 bus. The eastbound Route 11 is currently detoured from E Madison St to E John St between 15th Ave E and 23rd Ave E. People can currently connect to the eastbound Route 11 at 25th Ave E and E Madison St.

Route 11 and 12 reroutes between 12th Ave and 19th Ave

Bus Routes 11 and 12 are rerouted between 12th Ave and 19th Ave for ongoing paving and roadwork. Eastbound Route 12 is detoured up 15th Ave and continues onto its normal route up 19th Ave at the E Thomas St and 19th Ave intersection. Eastbound 11th Ave is also detoured up 15th Ave and continues east on E Thomas and E John streets, rejoining its’ normal route on E Madison St. We expect these reroutes to continue through the end of August.
