The Seattle Department of Transportation and King County Metro are partnering together to bring RapidRide to Madison St
The Madison St project area is busy, dense, and still growing. We're making street improvements to Madison and Spring streets that will allow King County Metro to operate frequent and reliable RapidRide G bus service from Downtown to Madison Valley.
Construction for the project is 50% complete!
We're working to make progress on construction as safely and efficiently as possible. Typical work hours are between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. We have obtained a noise variance to complete construction activities within allowable noise limits for work outside of these hours.

You Asked, We Answered!
What's with all the poles?
You may have noticed large poles being stored on the street and in the project area. These poles are for new traffic signals and overhead trolley wires. We’re installing nearly 130 new traffic signal and trolley wire poles, in addition to over 100 new streetlight and pedestal poles!
Why are they being staged here?
It takes a long time to design, build, and deliver these specialized poles. We're also managing ongoing supply chain issues from the pandemic that have made the process even longer. We obtained as many poles as we could so that they can be installed as soon as pole foundations are completed, and we keep construction on schedule. We’re staging them nearby in the public right of way where they are out of active construction areas and accessible for the contractor.
When will the poles be removed?
We were able to install many poles when they first arrived this Spring. We’ll continue to install poles as pole foundations are completed. The number of poles staged within the right of way will continue to dwindle as we complete pole foundations and install the poles throughout the summer.
We understand this may be frustrating, and we are working to complete the project as safely and efficiently as possible. Thank you for your patience!
Have a question yourself? Email us at MadisonBRT@Seatte.gov and your question may be included in the next email update!
What We've Been Working On
We continue to make steady progress and thank everyone for their continued patience during construction. Here’s what we accomplished in the month of May!
- Installed 406 linear feet of new curbs which is equivalent to 2/3 of the height of the Space Needle.
- Poured 2435 square yards of new roadway concrete and 940 square yards of sidewalk which, together, is equivalent to 12.4 Oval Offices.
- Placed 2,000 tons of new gravel which is equivalent to the weight of approximately 12.4 blue whales (at their heaviest).

- We installed 250 linear feet of detention pipe which is equivalent to the height of 1.4 Niagra falls.
- We laid 6,937 linear feet of utility conduits which is equivalent to 2.1 times the circumference of Cal Anderson Park in Capitol Hill.
- We set 32 new signals and/or trolley poles.
We also completed the installation of the new stormwater tank at 10th Ave! We are finishing repaving the street and will reopen 10th Ave back up later today!
This tank is the final (and biggest) of three stormwater storage tanks we built as a part of the project. The 10th Ave tank is the biggest of the three and can hold 57,000 gallons of water! Stormwater treatment is an essential part of maintaining the health of the Puget Sound and the surrounding watershed. These tanks will assist the local treatment system by holding excess water from precipitation and flooding so they can be treated and released back into the Sound! We partnered with Seattle Public Utilities to build this new tank. Shout out to SPU for all of their hard work!

As construction activities continue, bus stops on the project corridor will temporarily close or relocate as needed.King County Metro's Transit Alert page for the most accurate and up to date information, and to sign up for alerts. Metro Transit Alerts is the best way to stay up to date on bus reroutes and impacts to bus stops.
Route 8 reroute in Madison Valley
The Route 8 bus is currently rerouted in Madison Valley because of road construction at E Madison St and Martin Luther King Jr Way. We expect the reroute to remain through the end of August. People taking the Route 8 bus eastbound to the Madison Valley business district should get off at 23rd Ave and E John St and connect to the eastbound Route 11 bus at 23rd Ave and E Madison St.
We are currently working on a map for this reroute, and will post it to our webpage soon. Please check your emails and sign up for alerts from King County Metro.
Route 11 and 12 reroutes between 12th Ave and 19th Ave
Starting on June 27, bus Routes 11 and 12 will be rerouted between 12th Ave and 19th Ave for ongoing paving and roadwork. We expect these reroutes to continue through the end of August.

Detours and Closures
Eastbound E Madison St will close between 12th and 19th Avenues starting June 27 through September 1
Eastbound E Madison St is currently closed between 12th and 14th Avenues, and the closure will extend to 19th Ave starting June 27. Eastbound traffic will continue to be detoured to E Union St and 19th Ave (see map below) through August. Cars will no longer be able to access eastbound E Madison St at 14th Ave. The closure is necessary while we work on repaving the street.
(Above) Eastbound E Madison St is closed between 12th and 19th Avenues. Eastbound traffic is detoured onto East Union St at 12th Avenue, before turning left at 19th Avenue and rejoining Madison St.
Beginning June 29, 9th Ave will be closed to southbound traffic between Spring St and Madison St.
The road closure is necessary while we install electrical conduit and repave the road. This closure is expected to last through August. Traffic should follow all signage for alternate routes.
Beginning June 27, the north side of the Spring St and 7th Ave intersection will be closed.
The closure is necessary while we install conduit across the intersection and then repave. This closure is expected to last two weeks. While this work is happening, the 7th Ave will be closed at the north side of the intersection of Spring St. People driving can continue east on Spring St. Hubbell Pl will be local access only between Spring St and Seneca St. Vehicles will need to use Seneca St to access the I-5 north/south ramps. Crews will be working at night during some of this work.
Other closures and detours can sometimes occur due to unforeseen circumstances. We will send emails about any major closures and detours with specific information about closure impacts and traffic reroutes if they occur.
Sidewalk/Crosswalk closures and pedestrian detours:
We're working to keep sidewalks and crosswalks open as much as possible. People will notice barriers placed in the street that provide temporary walkways for pedestrians to move around construction areas. If a sidewalk or crosswalk is signed as closed, people should either follow the signed detour or the temporary walkway if one is provided. People should not walk in the road with traffic. Maps are available on our webpage that show areas where sidewalks and crosswalks are closed. These maps may not always capture every sidewalk and crosswalk closure, so please be mindful of signed closures and detours.
