The Seattle Department of Transportation and King County Metro are partnering together to bring RapidRide to Madison St
The Madison St project area is busy, dense, and still growing. We're making street improvements to Madison and Spring streets that will allow King County Metro to operate frequent and reliable RapidRide G bus service from Downtown to Madison Valley.
Construction for the project is 50% complete!
We're working to make progress on construction as safely and efficiently as possible. Typical work hours are between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. We have obtained a noise variance to complete construction activities within allowable noise limits for work outside of these hours.

What We've Been Working On
Although it can sometimes feel like construction progress is slow, we've been making steady progress throughout the project. In fact, we want to share some information that shows just how much we can accomplish in only one month!
Let's take a look at the numbers:
From March 31 through April 30 our crews installed:
-
2,453 square yards of new roadway panels
- About the size of 1.5 NHL hockey rinks!
-
675 feet of new curbing
- Almost the length of 2 NFL football fields!
-
759 square yards of sidewalk
- About the size of 1.5 NBA basketball courts!
Crews installed about 1.5 basketball courts worth of sidewalk in April!
Seattle Public Utiltiies crews also recently completed the installation of a new watermain. This installation was a massive undertaking, and we are so grateful for the patience of all of those impacted by the temporary water shutoffs that were required to complete this work. We also want to give a huge shoutout to Seattle Public Utilities themselves for completing the work!
How much pipe was replaced?
-
SPU installed 7,000 feet of new watermain
- The length of 8 Titanics!

You Asked, We Answered!
Many bus riders may have noticed that a few of their favorite bus shelters have gone missing!
Don't be alarmed, they haven't been stolen. In reality, many of these bus shelters have been temporarily removed while new sidewalks are installed along Madison St and in preparation of installing new, upgraded bus stops.
But when are they coming back?
The new bus shelters are being built off site, while foundations for the shelters are appearing with new sidewalks. Riders can expect the arrival of brand-new bus shelters as soon as this fall! We’ll keep you updated on the timing in these monthly updates.
Bus shelters, like the one pictured here, will be installed this fall
Have a question yourself? Email us at MadisonBRT@Seatte.gov and your question may be included in the next email update!
Events
The project outreach team will be at events throughout the summer to connect with people and talk about the project. Here’s a list of events where you can find us. We’ll continue to add to this list as other events are scheduled. We hope you stop by!
-
Saturday, June 3rd, from 5 - 7 PM Tabling Event at the Madison Valley Art Walk
- Our team will have a table at the corner of Martin Luther King Jr Way and E Madison St. Stop by to enjoy the community event and talk to our outreach team!
As construction activities continue, bus stops on the project corridor will temporarily close or relocate as needed. The map below shows known bus stop closures at this time. Bus stop closures and relocations change frequently. Please visit King County Metro's Transit Alert page for the most accurate and up to date information, and to sign up for alerts. Metro Transit Alerts is the best way to stay up to date on bus reroutes and impacts to bus stops.

Detours and Closures
Eastbound E Madison St is closed between 12th and 14th Avenues and will extend to 15th Ave next month.
Eastbound traffic on E Madison St between 12th and 14th Avenues will continue to be detoured into the summer. The closure and detour will be extended to 15th Ave in late June. Eastbound traffic is detoured to E Union St and 19th Ave (see map below).
(Above) Eastbound E Madison St is closed between 12th and 19th Avenues. Eastbound traffic is detoured onto East Union St at 12th Avenue, before turning left at 19th Avenue and rejoining Madison St.
10th Ave remains closed between E Union St and E Madison St while we install a new stormwater storage tank
Work on the new stormwater storage tank began in early May and is still underway. 10th Ave is closed to people driving between Union St and Madison St. E Seneca St is open for local access only although vehicles and pedestrians cannot cross 10th Ave via Seneca St. Sidewalks are open around the construction site (see map below). We expect this work and closure to continue through the end of June. Check out our benefits of the new stormwater tank!
10th Ave is closed between E Union St and E Madison St. Sidewalks will remain open
The intersection of 10th Ave and E Union St will be closed for up to one week while we continue work to install the new stormwater storage tank under 10th Ave
The closure is scheduled to begin on Monday, May 30, and remain in place through Friday, June 2. East and westbound car traffic will be detoured north off of E Union St to E Pike St. People biking will be detoured to E Pine St. See map below for detour details. Pedestrian access will be maintained through the area, but there will be pedestrian detours around the work area. Please follow all signed and verbal instructions if passing through the area.
Cars will be detoured north to E Pike St and bikes will be detoured north to E Pine St on Broadway and 11th Ave
Note: A similar map was sent in an email last week. This map depicted an eastbound detour that turned east from 11th Ave onto E Union St. That route was incorrect, as E Union St between 11th and 12th Avenues is a westbound one-way. Please follow all signed detours when navigating a construction zone.
Madison St closed at Boren Ave intersection weekends of June 2 and June 9 while crews repave the intersection.
Crews will be working in the east side of the intersection of Madison St and Boren Ave the weekend of June 2. This work is scheduled to begin at 7 PM on the evening of Friday, June 2 and end by 6 AM on the morning of Monday, June 5.
During this time Boren Ave will remain open to drivers. Madison St will be closed to people driving at Boren Ave and will provide local access only between Boren Ave and Broadway. We will restore left turns at Broadway for drivers headed westbound during these closures. The left turn lane restrictions at Broadway will resume when the closure at Boren is not in place.
Westbound drivers will be detoured north at Broadway to E Union St and Seneca St before turning south on Boren Ave. Eastbound drivers will be detoured south along Boren Ave to James St and turn north along Broadway. See map below for detour details.
Eastbound traffic will be detoured south on Boren Ave to James St then north along Broadway St to return to E Madison St, and Westbound traffic will be detoured north at Broadway to Union St and Seneca St before turning south on Boren Ave to return to Madison St
Crews will be working in the west side of the intersection of Madison St and Boren Ave the weekend of June 9. This work is scheduled to begin at 7 PM on the evening of Friday, June 9 and end by 6 AM on the morning of Monday, June 12. During this time Boren Ave will remain open to drivers and Madison St will be closed at Boren and provide local access only between Boren and People driving through the area are encouraged to use alternate routes, such as James, Pike or Pine to avoid the closure.
Eastbound traffic will be detoured south on 9th Ave to James St then north along Boren Ave to return to Madison St. Westbound traffic will be detoured north Boren Ave to Seneca St before turning south on Boren Ave to return to Madison St
6th Ave at the intersection of Madison St will be closed the weekend of June 16 while crews install electrical conduit across the road.
The closure is anticipated to go from Saturday, June 17 through Sunday, June 18. Please follow all signed detours during this closure, and use caution when driving through a construction area. Drivers are encouraged to avoid the intersection of Madison St and 6th Ave at this time.
Other closures and detours can sometimes occur due to unforeseen circumstances. We will send emails about any major closures and detours with specific information about closure impacts and traffic reroutes if they occur.
Sidewalk/Crosswalk closures and pedestrian detours:
We're working to keep sidewalks and crosswalks open as much as possible. People will notice barriers placed in the street that provide temporary walkways for pedestrians to move around construction areas. If a sidewalk or crosswalk is signed as closed, people should either follow the signed detour or the temporary walkway if one is provided. People should not walk in the road with traffic. Maps are available on our webpage that show areas where sidewalks and crosswalks are closed. These maps may not always capture every sidewalk and crosswalk closure, so please be mindful of signed closures and detours.
