Program 11: Bridge Spot Repair
Levy to Move Seattle commitment: Eliminate the backlog of bridge spot repairs.
(There was a backlog of 860 outstanding bridge repairs before the Levy to Move Seattle. We have addressed approximately 600 so far and are on track to eliminate this backlog! In addition to eliminating this backlog, we continue to respond to needed bridge maintenance/repair work, and since 2016 have averaged 572 repairs per year.)
As of 2022, we have varying level of responsibilities (ownership, operations, maintenance, and inspection) for nearly 317 bridges!
This is in addition to nearly 1,500 other types of roadway structures—like retaining walls, stairways, and underground support walls also known as areaways. All these structures need ongoing maintenance, inspections, monitoring, and preservation. We are committed to continuing a thorough and proactive asset preservation response. This maximizes the life of our infrastructure so we can rely on it to remain accessible and operational for public use.
We complete preventative and reactive maintenance on our roadway structures.
- Our proactive maintenance approach means we work to prevent issues with our bridges and roadway structures. We have a comprehensive bridge inspection program that helps us to identify and proactively address issues needing repair.
- Things do wear down due to use and age, so we also respond to repair requests from the public and observations from our inspections.
Joint repairs on the University Bridge.
In 2022, we completed 354 bridge spot repairs! Among other project commitments, we have:
- Sealed cracks on the Magnolia Bridge, 4th Ave Over Argo Bridge, Emerson St Bridge, Nickerson Interchange, Ballard Bridge, and Fauntleroy Expressway.
- Repaired/Replaced expansion joints, which allow a bridge to expand and contract during hot and cold weather on the Ballard Bridge, 4th Ave over Argo Railyard Bridge, 15th Ave/Leary Bridge, and Jose Rizal Bridge.
- Repair damaged bridge rails on the Ballard Bridge, Lakeview Blvd E Bridge, and NE 80th St Bridge.
- Patch concrete spalls (breakdown of concrete) on the Spokane St Viaduct, S Jackson St Bridge, 4th Ave S Bridge, University Bridge, and others
Rail repairs on Lakeview Blvd E Bridge.
Looking ahead:
- Eliminate the backlog of needed bridge spot repairs that existed prior to 2016 and continue to respond to new repair needs!
