ITS devices make our transportation system more efficient, safe, and predictable. They include:

  • Traffic control devices such as traffic signals, flashing beacons, and dynamic message signs (DMS)
  • Support devices such as closed circuit television cameras (CCTV) and data collection devices
  • Fiber optic communications for interconnected traffic signals and transmitting video and other information from city streets, back to SDOT's Transportation Operations Center (which, among more, manages traffic control devices and information)

The TOC, in turn, uses this information to provide real-time coordination with key stakeholders and public agencies around the region.

Expanding and improving the City’s ITS is an important way we prepare for emergencies and provide critical resources during traffic incidents and natural disasters. Thanks to the Levy, we have been able to make this network more resilient and secure with new communications network equipment.

We measure annual mileage of streets where the ITS Communications Network has been improved, and we have added over 110 miles to our ITS network thanks to the Levy to Move Seattle!

In 2022, we added 10 miles of new coverage to our ITS network. This includes mileage on Delridge Way SW, Northgate Way, 3rd Ave, and 4th Ave, as well as mileage through the University of Washington Multimodal Integrated Corridor Mobility for All program. The program included upgraded traffic signals to enhance travel for people of all abilities who walk, roll, bike, take transit, and drive in this area that experiences some of the city's heaviest traffic volumes.
