The Seattle Department of Transportation and King County Metro are partnering together to bring RapidRide to Madison St

The Madison St project area is busy, dense, and still growing. We're making street improvements to Madison and Spring streets that will allow King County Metro to operate frequent and reliable RapidRide G bus service from Downtown to Madison Valley.

Construction for the project is 50% complete!

We're working to make progress on construction as safely and efficiently as possible. Typical work hours are between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. We have obtained a noise variance to complete construction activities within allowable noise limits for work outside of these hours.

Westbound E Madison St will reopen between 12th and 14th Avenues on Monday, Monday, March 20; eastbound traffic will remain detoured through Spring.

Both directions of E Madison St remain closed between 12th Ave and 14th Ave until 6 AM on Monday, March 20. At that time, we will reopen westbound traffic on Madison St. Eastbound traffic will be detoured to E Union St and 19th Ave. This is the same eastbound closure and detour that has been in place since early this year. We expect the eastbound closure and detour to remain through the Spring. The closures are necessary as we complete work to replace a 120-year-old watermain and begin repaving the street. Madison St is narrower between 14th and 20th Aves, which is why we need to close one direction of traffic as we repave the street. There is a signed detour for people driving and buses are rerouted.

What to expect through 6 AM, Monday, March 20:

  • Eastbound traffic detoured to Union St and 19th Ave
  • Westbound traffic detoured to Pike St and 12th Ave
  • Southbound 14th Ave is local access only between Pine St and Pike St.
  • Southbound 14th Ave is closed from Pike St to Madison St
  • Northbound 14th Ave remains open. People driving on northbound 14th Ave can continue northbound across Madison St or turn right on Madison St.
  • Pedestrian access will be maintained, although there will be intermittent sidewalk and crosswalk closures through the work area. People walking and rolling should follow signed detours and be prepared for closures and detour routes to change as the work progresses.
  • Pedestrian access to businesses and residences will be maintained.
  • King County Metro bus routes 2 and 12 are rerouted around the closure.

What to expect after 6 AM, Monday, March 20:

  • Eastbound traffic will continue to be detoured to Union St with the detour extended to 19th Ave.
  • Westbound traffic will reopen.
  • Eastbound Route 12 buses will be detoured from E Madison St to E Union St to 14th Ave.
  • Route 2 will be detoured from Union St to Pike St between 11th and 14th Avenues in both directions.
  • Traffic shifts, lane closures, sidewalk and crosswalk closures, and signed detours for people driving, walking, and rolling.
  • Pedestrian access to businesses and residences will be maintained.
