The Seattle Department of Transportation and King County Metro are partnering together to bring RapidRide to Madison St
The Madison St project area is busy, dense, and still growing. We're making street improvements to Madison and Spring streets that will allow King County Metro to operate frequent and reliable RapidRide G bus service from Downtown to Madison Valley.
Construction for the project is 50% complete!
We're working to make progress on construction as safely and efficiently as possible. Typical work hours are between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. We have obtained a noise variance to complete construction activities within allowable noise limits for work outside of these hours.

As construction activities continue, bus stops on the project corridor will temporarily close or relocate as needed. Please visit King County Metro's Transit Alert page to learn more about these closures or relocations, and to sign up for alerts.
Detours and lane reductions
To make space for construction and to keep people traveling safe, we regularly install short and long-term detours.
Upcoming short-term closures:
- Access to southbound 8th Ave is restricted at Madison St. The intersection remains open, but drivers cannot turn onto southbound 8th Ave from Madison St or turn onto Madison St from northbound 8th Ave.
- Access to Madison St from E John St will be closed from today Friday, February 24th at 6 PM through Monday, February 27 at 6 AM.

- Eastbound Madison St between 12th and 14th Avenues

- 27th Ave south of Madison St
(Above) Eastbound E Madison St is closed between 12th and 19th Avenues. Eastbound traffic is detoured onto East Union St at 12th Avenue, before turning left at 19th Avenue and rejoining Madison St.

- Between 3rd and 6th Avenues
- Between Broadway and 15th Ave
- Between 12th and 14th Avenues
- Between 24th Ave and Martin Luther King Jr Way

What to Expect in Your Area
NOTICE: Construction schedules are subject to change
Downtown (1st Ave to 7th Ave): February 24 - March 13
- Daytime work on Spring and Madison streets from 7 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday; follow posted signs and signals for safe access through construction zones.
- Work continues in the southwest corner of the intersection of Spring St and 6th Ave. This work is expected to continue into next week. Work on Madison St between 3rd and 4th Avenues is scheduled to begin next week and continue into the week of March 13.
- Sidewalk work on the north side of Madison St between 5th and 6th Avenues will resume next week.
- Weekend work in the southwest corner of the intersection of Madison St and 1st Ave is scheduled to start tomorrow, Saturday February 25. Traffic will be reduced to one lane through the area, and pedestrians will be detoured around the work. This work is expected to continue through the month of March.
First Hill (7th Ave to Broadway): February 24 - March 13
- Daytime work on Madison and Spring streets from 7 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday; follow posted signs and signals for safe access through construction zones.
- Sidewalk work is ongoing in the northeast corner of the intersection of Madison St and Minor Ave, and is expected to continue into next week. Sidewalk work is also ongoing on the south side of Madison St between 7th and 9th Avenues and is expected to continue into the week of March 13.
- Weekend work is scheduled for the south side of the intersection of Madison St and 9th Ave from Saturday, March 11 to Sunday, March 12. This will require the full closure of 9th Ave between Madison and Marion streets.
Capitol Hill (Broadway to 23rd Ave): February 24 - March 13
- Daytime work on Madison St from 7 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday; follow posted signs and signals for safe access through construction zones.
- Eastbound Madison St is detoured onto Union St from 12th Ave to 19th Ave due to watermain work (see detour map above). The eastbound detour is expected to last until the end of March.
- Watermain work on Madison St between 13th and 15th Avenues is ongoing and will continue into March. Properties with water service interruptions will be notified.*
- Work on the south side of Madison St between Broadway and 12th Ave is ongoing and is scheduled to continue into the week of March 13.
- Sidewalk work is ongoing at the intersection of Union St and 12th Ave. This work will continue into the week of March 6. Sidewalk work is also scheduled to begin next week in the southeast corner of the intersection of Union St and 11th Ave. This work is expected to continue into the week of March 6. Sidewalk work is ongoing on the north side of Madison St between Denny Way and 23rd Ave and is expected to continue into the week of March 6. Sidewalk work on the north side of Madison St between 20th Ave and Denny Way is scheduled to begin next week and continue into the week of March 13. Sidewalk work on the north side of Madison St between 23rd Ave and John St is scheduled to begin the week of March 6 and continue into the week of March 13.
- Weekend work on Union St north of Madison St is scheduled to begin the evening of Friday, March 10 and continue into Sunday, March 12.
Madison Valley (23rd Ave to MLK Jr Way): February 24 - March 13
- Daytime work on Madison St from 7 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday; follow posted signs and signals for safe access through construction zones.
- Watermain work on Madison St between 25th Ave and Martin Luther King Jr Way is ongoing. This work requires temporary planned outages, and properties with utility impacts will be notified.*
- Night and weekend work is scheduled for the north side of the intersection of Madison St and 24th Ave starting tonight, Friday, February 24 at 6 PM and continuing until 6 AM the morning of Monday, February 27. Crews will be repaving the intersection. There will be no access to John St and 24th Ave from Madison St from Friday evening until Monday morning (see detour maps above), and parking will be restricted on John St and the southern half of the block on 24th Ave. Drivers will be able to access John St from 23rd Ave and can access 24th Ave from Thomas St. Street parking will be available on the north side of Madison St, and sidewalks throughout the area will remain open.

Construction shouldn't impact your plans this weekend!
Check out Two Doors Down and The Bottleneck Lounge. Located at the intersection of Madison St and 24th Ave, these locally-owned favorites are open for business during this weekend's construction!
Although construction will be happening nearby, these businesses will still be accessible. Some parking will be available on the north side of Madison St and limited parking will also be found on John St or 24th Ave (see above). Visitors will be able to use the sidewalks to access each location. Of course, if you'd prefer to enjoy your meal at home, feel free to order a few classics to go, and grab them at convenient pickup locations further west on Madison St.
