Construction updates: February 17, 2023
It’s been a busy couple of months as we wrapped up major construction of the Melrose Promenade. Thank you for your patience and support during this work. We still have work to do, and we will return in the spring to complete the protected bike lanes, install pavement markings, and make parking changes.
This project is a foundational step toward the community's "Melrose Promenade" vision by improving the experience for people walking, rolling, and biking along Melrose Ave. Over the last year, we completed a majority of the project improvements, including:
-
Raised intersection at E Pike St
-
Sidewalk and street repairs throughout project area
-
New accessible curb ramps throughout project area
-
New traffic calming elements such as curb bulbs
- Intersection improvements at E Pike St, E Denny Way, and E Olive Way, including realigning the I-5 NB on-ramp
- New “no left turn” sign for people driving eastbound on E Pike St at the intersection of Melrose Ave
Upcoming work in Spring 2023
The remaining work for the Melrose Promenade includes installing pavement markings, which requires warm, dry weather to complete. We’ll return in the spring to:
- Install the protected bike lanes between E Denny Way and E Pine St. We’ll install a combination of flex posts and concrete curbs to provide the bike lane buffer.
-
Install permanent pavement markings, including the colorful community crosswalks at E Pike St and E Pine St and bike lane markings
-
Make parking changes, including converting 16 legal parallel parking spaces on the west side of Melrose Ave E north of E Denny Way to 20 parking spots with 13 angled spaces and 7 parallel spaces. These parking spaces will be included in the expanded Restricted Parking Zone 32 (RPZ 32). Learn more about RPZs here.
We’ll send our next email update when this work is scheduled. During this work, you can expect short-term impacts to driveway access and temporary lane reductions. We’ll reach out to affected properties prior to work starting.

Upcoming project: Pike Pine Streetscape and Bicycle Improvements
We’re excited to inform you that construction for Pike Pine Streetscape and Bicycle Improvements project is planned to begin in February. Pike Pine Streetscape and Bicycle Improvements, developed in coordination with the Downtown Seattle Association’s Pike Pine Renaissance and the Seattle Department of Transportation, will provide a vibrant pedestrian experience on Pike and Pine streets between Capitol Hill and the Pike Place Market, with connections to the new waterfront.
The project includes improvements to crosswalks and sidewalks, more greenery, protected bike lanes and new public seating, all with a more consistent character and identity from end to end. The project will make Pike and Pine Streets one-way streets from 1st Ave to Bellevue Ave, with Pike St being one-way eastbound and Pine St being one-way westbound.
Work will begin in February between 4th and 6th avenues on Pike and Pine streets. The work will progress in phases with no more than 4 blocks under construction at any given time. Access to all properties on both Pike and Pine streets, including businesses and residences, will be maintained during construction work. Detour signage will direct pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers when necessary.
You can sign up to the weekly construction email that’ll keep everyone up to date on upcoming work activity and possible construction impacts. We highly recommend subscribing for it’s the best way to stay informed.
Thank you!
Thank you again for your support and patience during construction.
Sincerely,
Candace Goodrich Melrose Promenade Project Outreach Lead (206) 529-4295 MelrosePromenade@seattle.gov
