LEVY TO MOVE SEATTLE | Drainage Partnership, Seattle Public Utilities (SPU), South Park Program Spotlight

Thank you for your interest in the Levy to Move Seattle.

Program 17: Drainage Partnership, Seattle Public Utilities (SPU), South Park

Our Levy to Move Seattle commitment: Partner with Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) to pave streets, provide new pedestrian infrastructure and crossings, and address drainage issues in flood-prone South Park neighborhood.

Chronic flooding in the South Park neighborhood has been a major challenge for decades.

This is partially due to a lack of properly functioning drainage systems.  Some streets are unpaved gravel and lack sidewalks and street trees. The risk of flooding is higher during high tide and heavy rain events.

112 Super Sacs that each contain 100 large sandbags that weigh 35lbs each.

Above: We are preparing for the next king tide as we continue our work with Seattle Public Utilities on the larger South Park Drainage and Roadway Partnership Project. In mid-January, the City delivered 112 Super Sacs that each contain 100 large sandbags that weigh 35lbs each. The use of sandbags is a simple, but effective way to prevent or reduce flood water damage. Properly filled and placed sandbags can act as a barrier to divert moving water around, instead of through, buildings.

The South Park Drainage and Roadway Partnership Project is being built in partnership between SDOT and SPU. We have been working with the South Park community in planning these drainage, stormwater and road improvements since 2015.

The project is located between 2nd Ave S and 8th Ave S, extending to S Holden St and S Monroe St.

The map shows a future pump station on S Riverside Dr, drainage improvements between 5th & 7th Ave S on S Holden St, street & drainage improvements on S Holden St between 2nd & 5th Ave S, on 5th Ave S between S Austin St and S Monroe St, and on S Monroe St between 5th and 7th Ave S.

SPU plans to install new pipes and drains to collect and better manage stormwater and reduce flooding. This water will ultimately be directed to a future pump station for and Water Quality Facility for treatment prior to reaching the nearby Duwamish Waterway.

Additionally, many of the streets in this area are in poor condition, which adversely affects water quality and impacts freight mobility. We are repaving some areas, upgrading some gravel streets to pavement, and installing sidewalks and street trees.

Drainage improvements are funded by a King County Flood Control District grant.
