Honor and celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. during the City of Seattle's annual MLK Unity Day Celebration. The program will feature remarks from Mayor Bruce Harrell, Councilmember Tammy Morales, Office for Civil Rights Director Derrick Wheeler Smith, and a musical performance by Josephine Howell. Decades ago, local tribal leaders dreamed of a community center on the shores of Lake Union. Construction on the Northwest Native Canoe Center is set to begin this fall. The 1,200-square-foot building will be a home for canoe carving and a place for Indigenous people of the Pacific Northwest to reconnect to their heritage and homelands.
