Outreach Events

Over the last several months, the Community Engagement Team attended outreach events, interfaced with the community, and educated people about the Office of Police Accountability (OPA). Community Engagement hosted a table at an Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle event, Feeding the Community. Specialists passed out brochures and provided information about OPA. At the Youth and Law Forum, a Tukwila Community Center event, representatives spoke to Black youth and young adults who are considering careers in law and law enforcement.

OPA also hosted a series of presentations and community discussions at public library branches in Rainier Beach, Columbia City, and the International District. The presentations give insight into the complaint process, OPA’s investigations, and alternative complaint resolutions like the Mediation program. The Community Engagement Team plans to hold more presentations at libraries and/or community centers throughout 2023.

OPA Director Precinct Visits

In October, Director Betts visited the North Precinct to discuss OPA’s work with patrol officers and answer questions. This marks the first in a series of anticipated Precinct and specialty unit visits. These events are opportunities for SPD employees to meet with the Director and/or OPA staff and discuss their questions or concerns. In 2023, OPA will schedule a lineup of visits and office hours across various Watches.
