LEVY TO MOVE SEATTLE | Drainage Partnership, Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) South Park Spotlight

Thank you for your interest in the Levy to Move Seattle.

It’s important that you know where your tax dollars are going. Earlier this year, we started something new. Every two weeks, we are highlighting a Levy program or project in this newsletter.

Program 17 – Drainage Partnership, Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) South Park

Our Levy to Move Seattle commitment: Partner with Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) to pave streets, provide new pedestrian infrastructure and crossings, and address drainage issues in flood-prone South Park neighborhood.

Chronic flooding in the South Park neighborhood has been a major challenge for decades due to a lack of properly functioning drainage systems, particularly during high tide and heavy rain events. Many of the streets in this area are in poor condition, which adversely affects water quality and impacts freight mobility (which we learned about in the last newsletter!)

The South Park Drainage and Roadway Partnership Project will help reduce flooding by installing new pipes and drains to collect and better manage stormwater. This water will ultimately be directed to a future flood control pump station for treatment prior to reaching the nearby Duwamish Waterway. The new pump station is expected to be completed this year. SPU is also working on a stormwater quality facility to treat stormwater from the storm drain system before it flows into the Duwamish Waterway.

We have been working collaboratively with the South Park community in planning these drainage, stormwater and road improvements since 2015. All in all, we are:

  • Installing improved drainage and pipe systems in the South Park neighborhood, to better address recurring flooding and stormwater management challenges in the neighborhood.
  • Repaving some streets, and upgrading some gravel streets to pavement. Rebuilding the roadways is an important part of this project for both SPU and SDOT, since it will allow streets to drain effectively into a new stormwater conveyance system.
  • Building sidewalks throughout the project area
  • Planting nearly 100 years in the area, where there are currently very few trees.

We began construction in late 2021 and plan to complete the project in 2023.

Together, these projects will manage flooding and result in cleaner water and a healthier Duwamish River.

Thank you making this work possible through the Levy to Move Seattle.
