Melrose Promenade Project Updates

Construction updates: August 12, 2022

Complete sidewalk and accessible curb ramp at Melrose Avenue and East Roy Street

It’s been a busy couple of weeks for the Melrose Promenade project! We completed pavement and sidewalk repairs at E Mercer St, and we’re making progress at E Thomas St to repair the street and sidewalk and install new accessible curb ramps. The intersection of E Thomas St and Melrose Ave remains closed and local access to E Thomas St is maintained from Bellevue Ave.

Upcoming construction activities

Next week, we’ll be at E Olive Way to prepare the site for repairs that will occur at a later stage of the project. Work will include saw cuts, which will be noisy. Work will occur on the NE and SE corners of the intersection, and we'll be at each corner for approximately 1-2 hours. There will be temporary closures of the northbound and southbound travel lanes of Melrose Ave, and officers will be onsite to direct traffic. There will also be temporary sidewalk closures and detours. Please use caution when traveling through the area and follow signed detours.

Over the next several weeks, we’ll finish work at E Thomas St and head south toward E Denny Way to make pavement repairs. There will be temporary lane closures and detours will be signed. Once we finish work between E Thomas St and E Denny Way, we’ll move to E Olive Way to begin work on the reconfigured I-5 on-ramp. We anticipate starting work at Olive Way the week of August 22 and continuing into the weekend of August 27. During weekend work, the on-ramp will be closed to all traffic. We’ll provide detour routes and more details prior to the closure.

Please use caution when traveling through active construction areas and follow all posted detours. Please note that constructions schedules are always subject to change based on weather, materials availability, and crew availability.

During construction, you can expect:

  • Temporary parking restrictions
  • Temporary sidewalk, lane, intersection, and crossing closures
  • Typical weekday working hours from 7 AM – 5 PM
  • Typical weekend working hours from 9 AM – 5 PM
  • Noise, dust, and vibrations during work hours
  • Construction equipment and materials staged in the work area

Reminder: Weigh in on the Seattle Transportation Plan

Since May, we’ve been collecting feedback on what people want to see in Seattle’s transportation future as we develop the Seattle Transportation Plan (STP). The STP will establish a renewed vision for the future of Seattle's streets and public spaces and inform future transportation investments. The first phase of engagement will end on August 31. If you haven’t yet, we encourage you to visit the online engagement hub to take our phase 1 survey and share your input on our interactive map before the end of the month.

The second phase of community engagement on STP will begin in September 2022. During this next phase, we will share what we heard during phase 1, show how your input is helping to guide the plan, and solicit input on specific components of the plan to inform its continued community-driven development. We look forward to hearing more from you! To learn more, visit our project webpage and sign up for email updates to stay engaged.

The Office of Community Planning and Development is also asking for your help to update Seattle’s Comprehensive Plan (the One Seattle Plan). You can visit OPCD’s One Seattle Plan Engagement Hub to learn more and share your input to guide Seattle’s big-picture future.

Thank you!

Thank you in advance for your patience during construction, and don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or comments.

Sincerely,

Candace Goodrich
