News about the week ahead for the West Seattle Bridge Program.
The final phase of epoxy crack injection and carbon-fiber wrapping is underway on the West Seattle Bridge. We’re using the same methods from before the new post-tensioning system was completed: strengthening and reinforcing sections of the bridge’s concrete by filling existing cracks with an epoxy compound and applying sheets of polymer-infused carbon-fiber. Along with the compression forces from the post-tensioning system, these repair methods work to prevent the concrete from cracking in the future.
Sheets of carbon-fiber are applied to the interior and exterior concrete of the bridge’s girders. Once the polymer in the carbon-fiber wrapping is set, it will be even stronger than concrete.
Crews continue to make progress on major maintenance work needed to prepare the bridge to reopen to traffic. This week, we put up more signs on the recently installed overhead sign structures and began installing covers on the newly replaced expansion joints. We also continued pouring concrete for the new bridge deck overlay on the Fauntleroy Expressway just west of the high bridge and finished pouring the replacement concrete panels on the bridge’s western approach.
Crews continue pouring new concrete overlay on the Fauntleroy Expressway, preparing it for traffic once the bridge reopens.
While our focus remains on the high bridge repairs, crews are making steady progress on the low bridge rehabilitation effort. This week, we began assembling scaffolding on the work platforms that we installed on the low bridge earlier this summer. Scaffolding makes it easier for crews to safely access the bridge’s girders for epoxy crack injection and carbon-fiber wrapping work, which will begin in the coming months.
On Saturday, our signal crews will be working to replace overhead signs and complete wiring activities on 14th Ave S and S Cloverdale St. The work is anticipated to begin as early as 8 AM and conclude by 3 PM. For people driving, we may need to briefly close lanes directly below the signs while this work takes place. Please navigate the area with caution.
On Sunday, from 6 AM to 3 PM, our landscaping crews will be cleaning the parking strips and medians on Olson Place SW and SW Roxbury St. Clean-up efforts will begin on Olson Place SW where we will close a single eastbound lane and proceed to SW Roxbury St where we will close a single westbound lane. Please anticipate delays while traveling in the area.
On Saturday and Sunday, we will be working at 16th Ave SW and SW Cambridge St to update curb bulbs and curb ramps. Work will begin as early as 8 AM and conclude at 5 PM. We’ll maintain traffic throughout the area, but people driving can expect delays.
As part of our Vision Zero plan to end traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2030, we partnered with the Portland Bureau of Transportation to launch a joint public safety campaign urging drivers to “Slow the Flock Down.” The campaign aims to remind people that driving the speed limit helps to keep everyone on the street—whether they’re driving, walking, biking, or rolling—safe.
The campaign is designed to raise awareness that speed limits have been lowered to 25 miles per hour on most Seattle arterial streets. Read our blog post to learn more about the campaign and actions you can take to keep people on our streets safe.
