Thank you for your interest in the Levy to Move Seattle.
It’s important that you know where your tax dollars are going. Earlier this year, we started something new. Every two weeks, we are highlighting a Levy program or project in this newsletter.
Levy to Move Seattle Program Spotlight
Program 6 - Sidewalk Safety Repair
Our Levy to Move Seattle commitment: Repair up to 225 blocks of damaged sidewalks in our urban centers and villages.
We also complete over 1,000 sidewalk spot repairs per year, such as asphalt shims over cracks and uplifts on sidewalks, beveling the sidewalk to create a flush surface, and curb repairs. (In fact, in 2021 we made over 17,000 sidewalk repairs!)
Seattle has almost 2,300 miles of sidewalk that help people travel safely and move around the city. The goal of this program is to make sidewalks safe and accessible. Repairs are often the property owner’s responsibility, but if a sidewalk is adjacent to City-owned property or City owned trees are causing the damage, SDOT will repair them. To do so, we either fully replace the sidewalk needing repair, or do preventative maintenance (shims and bevels).
As of the end of June 2022, we have repaired a total of over 173 blocks of sidewalk and made over 62,000 sidewalk repairs thanks to the Levy to Move Seattle. We are on track to meet our Levy goals.
Below are some recent examples of sidewalks we’ve repaired and/or replaced.

Sidewalk on E Thomas St & 17th Ave E before repair (left) and after (right).
We prioritize sidewalk repairs based on:
-
The safety conditions of the sidewalk
-
How the sidewalk is affecting people’s mobility
-
How expensive it is to repair the sidewalk
-
How heavily the sidewalk is used, based on its distance to schools, government and medical facilities, transit, etc.
-
If we can partner with another project to complete the repair (such as replacing a sidewalk at the same time as we install a new curb ramp in the same place)
-
If the sidewalk repair is in a historically and currently disadvantaged neighborhood
-
If the repair is an emergency or many people complain about the sidewalk condition
We are working on resources to help everyone understand how to take care of our sidewalks and make them accessible for people to walk and roll.
Thank you making this work possible through the Levy to Move Seattle.
