News about the week ahead for the West Seattle Bridge Program.

This week marks the completion of our pre-tensioning phase of epoxy crack injection and carbon-fiber wrapping that began back in February. This work was necessary to strengthen sections of the bridge’s concrete that had weakened over time and reinforce the areas that surround the new structural components for the post-tensioning system.
 Injecting cracks with epoxy and wrapping sections of the bridge in carbon-fiber (seen above) were an important first step in strengthening and reinforcing the bridge. After tensioning the bridge, we will complete a final round of epoxy injection and carbon-fiber wrapping work.
We continued assembling protective ducts that will encase the post-tensioning cables. We are working to position the assembled ducts inside the bridge by using temporary rigging lines and support towers. Once the ducts are in their final position, we will be able to start installing the cables in them using specialized equipment. When the cables are installed, we will begin the tightening process to compress the bridge structure’s concrete.
 We built temporary support towers to elevate and brace the ducts that will encase the post-tensioning cables.
We continue to make progress on major maintenance work. We wrapped up concrete grinding and surface preparation work on the Fauntleroy Expressway this week. With the top half inch of concrete removed on about 2 acres of the expressway, we will start pouring new concrete overlay in the coming weeks.
 Two platforms were hoisted to the underside of the low bridge’s eastern span. This allows us to begin our low bridge rehabilitation work.
Last weekend, we successfully hoisted two platforms to the underside of the low bridge’s eastern span. This effort begins our low bridge rehabilitation work that will strengthen the low bridge to keep it strong for years to come.
We will begin epoxy crack injection and carbon-fiber wrapping to reinforce the concrete on the low bridge in the coming months. This is the same concrete strengthening method we’ve been using on the high bridge.
We’ll hoist work platforms on the bridge’s western span in the next few weeks so that crews can easily access the underside of the bridge’s girder.
On Saturday and Sunday, we will be repairing potholes on the Spokane Street Viaduct in the eastbound direction. The repairs will close the access to the Spokane Street Viaduct and the SR 99 Loop Ramp. People driving will have access to East Marginal Way S, 1st Ave S, 4th Ave S, and I-5. However, there will be a detour in place. Work will begin as early as 6 AM and conclude by 4:30 PM both days. Please navigate the area with caution.
 We’re planning to complete two projects this Saturday, July 2. For all planned construction, we expect to begin work as early as 6 AM and conclude by 5 PM. Please anticipate delays, drive safely in work zones, and follow directions from signs and flaggers.
- We’ll be finishing the repairs on eastbound SW Spokane St in the vicinity of 11th Ave SW near Harbor Island. This is phase three of three phases to repair the damaged lane divider. Traffic impacts include closure of the East Marginal Way S and the lower SW Spokane St ramps. There will be a detour in place for those traveling in the area.

Updating signal lights on 7th Ave S and S Cloverdale St in South Park. A majority of the work will be completed on 7th Ave S with minimal impacts to S Cloverdale St.

Once the West Seattle Bridge reopens, all restrictions on the Spokane St Swing Bridge (low bridge) will be removed. We will be turning off and removing the cameras used for automated photo enforcement. Until the high bridge reopens, please continue to avoid the low bridge unless authorized. As a reminder, the restrictions are:
- Low bridge is closed to most vehicles weekdays from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. and weekends 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Unauthorized vehicles will receive a $75 ticket for every trip across the bridge.
- Low bridge is open to everyone weeknights from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. and weekends from 9 p.m. to 8 a.m.
- Low bridge pedestrian path is open all days and all hours for people walking, rolling, using an electric foot scooter, or biking.
