Greetings HSD Community,

June is upon us, and it finally feels like the warm weather is around the corner. It’s time to uplift Pride Month, Juneteenth, and more. We are also inviting you to join HSD this year in recognizing National Gun Violence Awareness Month and Wear Orange Weekend.

Pride Month
During the month of June, HSD and the City of Seattle celebrate LGBTQ+ community members, family, and friends. HSD advocates for equity and access year-round to the resources and solutions which help build strong, healthy communities for all people, including the LGBTQ+ community. Here are some ways to learn more and celebrate:

Juneteenth
Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the abolition of slavery in the United States. From its Galveston, Texas origin in 1865, the observance of June 19th has spread across the United States and beyond in recent years. Yet 2022 is the very first time that this holiday is being officially recognized by the City of Seattle. Join Atlantic Street Center and the Rainier Beach Community Center for a free event to commemorate a health conscience Juneteenth or the 6th Annual Juneteenth Celebration in Othello Park.

National Gun Violence Awareness Month and Wear Orange Weekend
HSD is focusing on four engagement opportunities:

  1. #WearOrange: June 3-5, 2022 wear orange to show solidarity and bring attention to Gun Violence Awareness Month. We encourage our community partners to continue wearing orange during the month of June.
  2. Attend an event: Seattle Wear Orange will table at Pride in the Park on June 4, 2022. We encourage community members to stop by and show support and engage in dialogue on gun violence.
  3. Attend the virtual Lunch and Learn with City of Seattle’s Human Resources Department (internal -- for City employees only)
  4. Take individual and team pictures to upload to social media with the hashtag #GunViolenceAwarenessMonth

Other ways to participate can be found here: Ways to Participate | Wear Orange
