Thank you for your interest in the Levy to Move Seattle.

It’s important you know where your tax dollars are going, so we recently started something new. Every two weeks, we are highlighting 1-2 Levy programs and projects in this newsletter.

Levy to Move Seattle Program Spotlight

Program 3 - Markings

Our Levy to Move Seattle commitment: Increase crosswalk repainting frequency to a four-year or better cycle to ensure every crosswalk is clearly marked.

Each year, we make sure that Seattle’s roads and crosswalks are clearly marked. On crosswalks, this helps people walking, rolling, and biking be more visible in crosswalks. Each crosswalk in the city gets re-painted at least once every four years. This means we repaint 1,500 crosswalks per year.

Each summer, we also re-stripe the yellow and white lines on 560 lane-miles of Seattle’s main arterial roads. This ensures that people driving can see the edges of the lanes - an important measure to reduce collisions between vehicles.

Seattle’s crosswalks and most other road markings are made of liquid thermoplastic, a more durable product than paint. The yellow and white lines that you see in the middle of the street are made of paint, which is why they get repainted annually on our main arterial roads. We paint from around July 4th into September each year to take advantage of the hottest weather. When you see us restriping, please avoid the paint lines because they may be wet! Read more about crosswalk and arterial repainting on the SDOT Blog.

In addition to repainting crosswalks and arterials, we also install new crosswalks funded by the Levy. Just last quarter (from January to March 2022), we installed marked crosswalks in six locations including 3rd Ave W and W Roy St, N 100th and College Way N, and Renton Ave S and S 55th St.

Thank you making this work possible through the Levy to Move Seattle.
