High bridge repair: more work on post-tensioning; continuing bridge maintenance

high bridge repair graphic

Progress on the new post-tensioning system continued this week as we completed more form work for the system’s structural components. We will continue prep work for additional concrete pours in the coming weeks.

The next step in the post-tensioning process is to prepare the steel cables by threading them through openings in the new concrete components. After we complete the final concrete pours and all the concrete components have cured, we will begin to tighten the strands. By tightening these strands that span the length the of the bridge, we will compress the concrete to prevent future cracking and strengthen the structure.

Removing and replacing the old sign bridge structures from the West Seattle Bridge.

We have also been working day and night this week to replace overhead traffic signs and their structures in preparation for when we reopen the bridge to traffic. This work involves chipping away concrete from the base of the existing structure and replacing the old foundation with a brand new one.

Construction in West Seattle this weekend

Starting on Saturday from 7 AM to 4 PM, we’ll be working in South Park to replace the sidewalk on Dallas Ave S near 12th Ave S as part of our Reconnect West Seattle work. We will have a detour in place for people walking and biking as we complete the upgrade. This work will take multiple days to complete and there will be minimal impacts to people driving as we will be primarily working from the parking area. Please anticipate delays and navigate the area with caution.

On Sunday, we’ll be replacing two traffic signs on SW Spokane St in the westbound direction. We anticipate this work to begin as early as 7 AM and conclude by 5 PM. We’ll need to reduce the two travel lanes to a single lane and there may be delays for people driving

Please know this work is weather dependent. If there is a change in schedule, we'll include an update in next week's email.

King County work continues in Georgetown on the detour route

On the West Seattle Bridge detour route, people driving westbound on S Michigan St may experience delays near 4th Ave S and S Michigan St in Georgetown as part of King County work at the King County Wet Weather Treatment Station. Read King County’s April 29 project update for lane closure information

If you are traveling in the area this weekend, consider using alternative routes around the work zone like taking East Marginal Way S instead of driving through Georgetown. See our West Seattle Bridge detour route map for alternative routes, like East Marginal Way S.

Check out our latest quarterly report for Reconnect West Seattle

Reconnect West Seattle was borne out of the unexpected closure of the West Seattle Bridge, which dramatically impacted West Seattle and nearby Duwamish Valley communities. Through Reconnect West Seattle, we have a vision to restore travel across the Duwamish to similar levels seen before the bridge closure and, at the same time, reduce the impacts of increased detour traffic in the Duwamish Valley neighborhoods.

To date, we've completed 47 safety and mobility improvements throughout local Home Zone neighborhoods.

Each quarter (January-March, April-June, July-September, and October-November), we’re sharing a “mini-report” focusing on what we’ve done recently to help advance the Reconnect West Seattle goals, as well as a preview of what you can expect to see next.

View our latest quarterly report (Q1, 2022).

We aim to complete the remaining projects already identified by community members in the months leading up to and following the West Seattle Bridge reopening. We'll continue to provide progress updates and work directly with community members throughout the completion of all Reconnect West Seattle projects. Learn more in our recent blog post

Question of the week: How do I learn about construction projects in West Seattle?

We’re continuously working to improve Seattle streets for everyone, as well as deliver the projects from the Levy to Move Seattle. Beyond filling potholes and helping buses and freight deliveries run on time, we also pave streets, adjust traffic signals, create enjoyable public spaces, and build a network of bike lanes and sidewalks to serve people of all ages and abilities.

As you see construction in your neighborhood and throughout West Seattle, you can learn more about it through our Project and Construction Coordination Map. This interaction map displays up-to-date information on current and future construction projects in the right of way, as well as other events that may impact traffic.
