West Seattle Bridge Weekly Update

News about the week ahead for the West Seattle Bridge Program.

High bridge repair: More progress on post-tensioning structural concrete; additional maintenance underway

We’ve completed the third structural concrete pour for the new post-tensioning system. While we prepare for more pours in May, we’re also removing the wooden forms from the concrete we poured the last few weeks now that it’s solid. After the concrete fully sets or “cures”  for about a week, the forms are ready to come off.

Check out our time lapse video linked below to see the form removal process in action.

After we remove the forms from each structural component, the concrete will continue to cure for another 3 to 4 weeks before we tighten the cables.

The new post-tensioning cables will pass through the two circular holes of this newly poured concrete support block.

We also made progress on major maintenance work for the West Seattle Bridge this week. This work included preparation for the replacement of overhead signage and more expansion joints on the bridge.

Construction throughout West Seattle and an intersection closure in South Park this weekend

We are working in several locations in West Seattle this weekend:

  • On Saturday and Sunday, between 7 AM to 5 PM, we’re updating curb ramps at 16th Ave SW and SW Barton St in the Highland Park neighborhood. We will be working from the parking lanes, but people driving in the area can expect minor delays.
  • Additionally on Saturday and Sunday, between 7 AM to 5 PM, we’ll be installing traffic signs on southbound SR 99 between S Atlantic S and S Spokane St.  During this work, we’ll need to reduce the two travel lanes to a single lane. People driving southbound on SR 99 may experience delays.
  • On Sunday between 7 AM to 3:30 PM, we’ll be installing speed bump markings in West Seattle at 12th Avenue SW and SW Kenyon St. We expect minimal traffic impacts and people driving will be able to continue around the work zone in both directions.

In the South Park neighborhood, the intersection of S Chicago St and 5th Ave S will be closed on Saturday and Sunday from 6 AM to 4 PM for upgrading the main water line under the street. This work is part of the South Park Drainage and Roadway Partnership, which is a project we are working together on with Seattle Public Utilities to improve chronic flooding and drainage issues in South Park.

The construction contractor will maintain access to private properties and 5th Ave S will be reopened during non-working hours. Parking will not be allowed along this section of 5th Ave S and S Chicago St to make room for construction crews and equipment.

Next week: Overnight U-turn closure from SW Spokane St to W Marginal Way

Near the Chelan 5-way intersection, we’re closing the U-turn to W Marginal Way overnight from 10 PM to 5 AM on Wednesday, May 4 and Thursday, May 5 for ongoing West Seattle Bridge maintenance work.

King County work: Street improvement work at King County Wet Weather Treatment Station

On the West Seattle Bridge detour route, people driving westbound on S Michigan St may experience delays near 4th Ave S and S Michigan St in Georgetown as part of King County work at the King County Wet Weather Treatment Station. If you are traveling in the area this weekend, consider using alternative routes around the work zone.

Learn more about this King County project here.

Question of the week: What’s the difference between a speed hump and a speed cushion?

Speed humps and speed cushions are used to help reduce speeds and discourage cut-through traffic in neighborhoods, creating a safer experience on the street for all users – people driving, walking, biking, rolling, and taking the bus.

We typically install speed humps and speed cushions on streets where people on average are driving 5 miles per hour or more over the speed limit. We’ve built many of them throughout West Seattle, South Park, and Georgetown in response to community comments and speed studies we conducted near the West Seattle Bridge detour route.

What’s the difference between the two? Speed humps are a solid hump across the travel lane and are typically installed on neighborhood streets. Speed cushions leave space for emergency vehicles to pass through and are used on designated fire and emergency routes. Below are examples.
