This week, we shifted our focus to the exterior of the bridge as we finished interior epoxy crack injection and carbon-fiber wrap work. We will continue to work on filling cracks and wrapping the outside of the bridge’s girders with carbon-fiber in the coming weeks.
Applying carbon-fiber to the exterior of the bridge.
Our next major step in the repair process is to install a new post-tensioning system on the bridge’s interior. Once installed, this additional post-tensioning will span the entire length of the bridge’s structure and literally compress the concrete, adding significant strength to all three spans. The system consists of more than 50 concrete blocks and anchors that guide and secure strands of steel cables, which we will tighten using a hydraulic ram. To prepare for the post-tensioning install, we’re continuing core drilling and installing forms for blocks and anchors.
We have completed many of the 50+ forms that are needed for the concrete post-tensioning components.
After we finish installing additional tensioning strands, we will complete a final phase of epoxy crack injection and carbon-fiber wrap.
Weather permitting, we plan to complete several projects this weekend with concrete becoming more available. For all planned construction, we expect to begin work as early as 7 AM and conclude by 4 PM. Please anticipate delays, drive safely in work zones, and follow directions from signs and flaggers.
On Saturday and Sunday, we’ll be updating the curb ramps and pavement at S Albro Pl and S Eddy St in Georgetown. During this work, there will be a minor closure on the westbound direction of S Eddy St between S Albro Pl and Ellis Ave S. We anticipate minimal traffic impacts during this work.
On Saturday, we’ll be working in several locations.
-
Updating curb ramps on 45th Ave SW and SW Admiral Way. We may need to shift travel lanes slightly to complete this work, but the street will still be accessible to traffic.
-
Making several pavement updates on 16th Ave SW in the Highland Park neighborhood, including such as:
-
Installing crosswalks at 16th Ave SW and SW Myrtle St
-
Installing pavement markings and crosswalks on 16th Ave SW between Cambridge St and Roxbury St
-
Restoring the pavement markings at 16th Ave SW and SW Barton St
-
Restoring pavement markings on West Marginal Way between 2nd Ave SW and Highland Park Way. We’ll also be installing reflectors on West Marginal Way to help with visibility on rainy days. This work will take multiple weekends to complete.
-
Installing a speed hump and completing remaining construction activities on SW Webster St between 12th Ave SW and 15th Ave SW in Highland Park where we built a natural drainage system earlier this month. Traffic will still be allowed in both directions.
-
Replacing overhead signs on West Marginal Way as it approaches the Chelan 5-way intersection and on the Fauntleroy Expressway just before the West Seattle Bridge onramp.
Since the closure of the West Seattle High-Rise Bridge in March 2020, finding ways that we each can reduce our traffic in the area is crucial to keeping people and goods moving safely and efficiently.
Our online travel options guide is regularly updated with ways to travel to, from, and around the West Seattle peninsula during the bridge closure. Walking, biking, taking transit, ridesharing — or changing your trip to stay local or travel at off-peak times — are all ways people are getting around and helping reduce their impact on communities located along major detour routes.
Biking or using an electric foot scooter is a great way to travel around West Seattle and can be used to cross the Spokane St Swing Bridge (low bridge) on the pedestrian path.

Ongoing concrete strike: There is an ongoing concrete strike in the Seattle area affecting our many active construction projects. This project, and several others, have had to pause concrete work until the strike is resolved. This is a challenge, and we support a fair resolution among the parties. In the near term, we're continuing other project work and will share more about any impacts to this project as information becomes available. We remain hopeful that this issue will be resolved soon.

Construction is complete on the Andover Bridge seismic retrofit. We’ve opened the SW Andover St Pedestrian and Bicycle Bridge (Andover Bridge) to the public again after completing a seismic retrofit to make the bridge safer and stronger in the event of an earthquake. Upgrading this aging bridge to current earthquake safety standards was included as part of the Levy to Move Seattle package passed by voters in 2015. Thank you, West Seattle, for your patience as we completed this work.
