Melrose Promenade Project Updates

Construction is officially underway!

Intersection with traffic lights, painted bike lane and colorful crosswalk with buildings in the background and cars.

Last week, we began preparing for early construction activities by placing ‘No Park’ signs in work areas and staging construction equipment in the project area. This week, we began drainage and electrical work near Melrose Ave and E Pine St. We will continue drainage and electrical work near the intersections of Melrose Ave and E Pine St and Olive Way over the next several weeks. This work will be noisy at times and will have short-term, temporary travel lane and parking impacts. See below for more information on the construction schedule and what to expect during construction activities.

Ongoing concrete workers' strike

As mentioned in our last email update, the ongoing general strike of concrete drivers and plant workers in the Seattle area is impacting our ability to confirm the schedule for additional construction activities that require concrete. In the meantime, we will continue with activities that do not require concrete, such as the drainage and electrical work. We will provide more information on the status of the strike and any impacts to our project schedule as soon as we know more.

Upcoming drainage and electrical work

Beginning this week and continuing through the end of March, we are conducting drainage and electrical work near the intersections of Melrose Ave and E Pine St and Olive Way. This work includes pavement cutting and breaking in the street and on the sidewalk and site preparation for new drainage structures and electrical conduits. During construction, you can expect noise, dust, and vibrations, particularly during pavement cutting and breaking. These noisier activities will only last a few hours at a time. When work is complete, we will place asphalt patches until final restoration at a later stage of the project.

Please note that work schedules are weather dependent and subject to change.

Week of March 7

  • Drainage work in the street at the SE, SW, and NE corners of Melrose Ave and E Pine St, including pavement cutting and breaking and installation of drainage structures. This work will be noisy at times and may continue into the following week.
  • Potholing in the street at the intersection of Melrose Ave and E Pine St to confirm underground utility locations. This work will require use of a vactor truck, which will be noisy, and people may feel vibrations. Asphalt patches will be placed over the holes when work is complete.
  • During work, you can expect:
    • Temporary, short-term closure of the southbound lane of Melrose Ave at E Pine St. Vehicles may still travel southbound on Melrose Ave with the assistance of flaggers.
    • Parking restrictions in the area adjacent to the SE corner of the intersection.
    • Temporary, short-term closure of the westbound right turn lane on E Pine St to northbound Melrose Ave while crews are working on the NW corner of the intersection. Vehicles will still be able to turn right from E Pine St onto Melrose Ave using the inside/through lane.

Week of March 14

  • Electrical work in the street at the intersection of Melrose Ave and Olive Way, including pavement cutting and breaking and installation of electrical conduits. This work will be noisy at times, and include temporary, short-term single lane closures on Olive Way between the I-5 off-ramp and Melrose Ave. Vehicles exiting I-5 will merge with traffic on Olive Way with assistance from a flagger.
  • Electrical work in the street at the intersection of Melrose Ave and E Pine St, including pavement cutting and breaking for installation of electrical conduits. This work will be noisy at times.

Weeks of March 21 and 28

  • We will finish any remaining drainage or electrical work, including cleaning up work sites and installing temporary asphalt patches as needed. Minimal, if any, pedestrian, or vehicle impacts are anticipated during this work.

Vegetation clearing and limited tree removal

This month, we will begin trimming overgrown vegetation and removing a limited number of trees located on Melrose Ave near Olive Way and E Olive Pl, as well as on the I-5 on-ramp. We will post notices on these trees 2 weeks in advance of their removal. Later in the project, we will plant new trees on Melrose Ave between E Olive Way and E Pike St.

Tell us your needs during construction

If you haven’t already completed the pre-construction survey, please do so to let us know your needs during construction. Thanks to all those who have already completed the survey!
