West Seattle Bridge Weekly Update
News about the week ahead for the West Seattle Bridge Program.
We’ve continued the epoxy crack injection on the interior of the bridge this week and began preparing for carbon-fiber wrap work on the bridge’s exterior. These two steps are essential for sealing cracks in the bridge and strengthening existing concrete.
On the work platforms, we use a pump to inject cracks with an epoxy compound ahead of applying carbon-fiber wrap to the bridge’s exterior.
In addition to assembling more scaffolding on the east span work platforms, we also completed more core drilling work. Over the coming weeks, we will core drill over 30 holes through different parts of the bridge’s interior to prepare for the post-tensioning cables that will span the length of the bridge.
The new post-tensioning cables will pass through the drilled holes in the bridge’s interior.
We’re also continuing to make forms for post-tensioning components.
In the weeks ahead, we will continue epoxy crack injection and carbon-fiber work on the interior and exterior of the bridge. We will also keep forming post-tensioning components so that we are ready to pour as soon as concrete becomes available.
We share the community's goal of creating pedestrian-friendly neighborhood streets. One way to accomplish this goal is to work collaboratively with a neighborhood to create a home zone. A home zone plan involves the entire neighborhood working together to prioritize improvements that calm traffic, improve pedestrian mobility and improve neighborhood livability.
Through Reconnect West Seattle, we implemented three home zones in Highland Park, South Park, and Georgetown. We conducted an inclusive process in these neighborhoods to identify pedestrian improvements and traffic calming options to mitigate the impact of the West Seattle High-Rise Bridge closure.
Our Reconnect West Seattle Home Zone team members complete a neighborhood walk with Georgetown community members.
Since finalizing the home zone plans in each neighborhood, we’ve been building many traffic calming elements like speed humps, curb ramps, pedestrian walkways, and crossing signals. See each home zone plan and our progress on the Reconnect West Seattle Home Zones webpage.

Ongoing concrete strike: There is an ongoing general strike of concrete drivers and concrete plant workers in the Seattle area that involves companies that supply us with concrete for our many active construction projects. This project, and several others, have had to pause concrete paving work until the strike is resolved. This is a challenge and we support a fair resolution among the parties. In the near term, we're continuing other project work and will share more about any impacts to this project as information becomes available. We remain hopeful that this issue will be resolved soon.
