Dear neighbors,
Check out the Art tab on our website for new videos featuring our FLOW artists and learn why they wanted to work on this project.

See photos of recent construction activities.

Ballard

Crews are excavating the 120+-ft deep vertical shaft. This work will take about two months. During this time, you can expect:

  • An uptick in truck traffic as soil is hauled off site. Trucks will travel along Shilshole Ave NW to NW 46th St to 14th Ave NW up to NW Market St then north along 15th Ave NW, to Holman Road NW towards I-5 (see map).

Working hours are expected to be 7 am - 5 pm Monday through Friday. Night and weekend work may occur to maintain progress.

As early as 2023, we'll build new conveyance pipes along 24th Ave NW, 28th Ave NW, and NW 56th St to connect Ballard's existing sewer system to the new storage tunnel. This work will include removing and restoring the traffic circle at the intersection of 28th Ave NW and NW 56th St, along with other impacts in the right of way. If you, or someone you know, maintains the landscaping in this traffic circle, please reach out to the project team at SPU_ShipCanalProject@seattle.gov. We'd love to hear your feedback on how the circle should be restored.

East Ballard

Soil stabilization continues. Through late December, you should anticipate:

  • NW 45th St closed to traffic; vehicles must detour onto NW 46th St.
  • 11th Ave NW open with periodic one-lane closures. During a closure, two-way traffic will be maintained via one lane controlled by flaggers.
  • Burke-Gilman Trail users remain detoured to the north side of NW 45th St; flaggers to help direct traffic. Please follow all detour guidance on site. Bicyclists must cross train tracks at 90-degree angles.
  • Noise and vibrations typical of a construction site.

Regular work hours will be Monday through Friday, 7 am to 5 pm. Night and weekend work may occur to maintain progress.

See anticipated traffic impacts through 2022 on our website.

Fremont

Crews excavating material for the second pile in Fremont.

Secant pile wall construction started in Fremont (see photo above). This work will last through October and will continue to be very noisy. During this time, you should anticipate:

  • Noise and vibration from the drilling machine. If you live or work within a few blocks of the site, you may be able to feel the vibration in your building. This is expected, and we are monitoring vibration levels on site to ensure they are within allowable levels.
  • NW 36th St between Leary Way NW and 3rd Ave NW to be closed (through remainder of the project, mid-2023).
  • Pedestrians detoured to the north side of Leary Way NW.
  • A pump and bypass system running 24/7 to re-route an existing drainage line around the secant pile construction. This system is powered by a generator and will be in place through the end of the year.

Regular work hours will be Monday through Friday, 7 am to 5 pm. Night and weekend work may occur to maintain progress.

Wallingford

Over the next few weeks, the Wallingford site will be relatively quiet while equipment is in use at other sites. In mid-October, crews will prepare the site for secant pile wall construction. We'll send more information on anticipated impacts in our next update.

Queen Anne

Photo showing crews excavating guide walls in Queen Anne.

Crews excavated the guide walls for the secant pile wall (see photo above) and are installing dewatering wells. For the next few weeks, you should anticipate:

  • The West Ewing Mini Park parking lot to be closed. This closure is anticipated to last through mid-2023.
  • A localized Ship Canal Trail detour through summer 2022. See our previous update for a map.
  • Noise and vibrations typical of a construction site.
  • Equipment being staged in the area.

Regular work hours will be Monday through Friday, 7 am to 5 pm. Night and weekend work may occur to maintain progress.
