Dear neighbors,

We have a few announcements to share!

Ballard’s 24th Ave NW pier will remain open until further notice because our tunneling contractor does not currently need it for construction activities.

Also, our first round of temporary art is now installed in four neighborhoods. Check out the new art tab on our website to learn more.

Lastly, Seattle Public Utilities is now on Flickr! Check out albums uploaded last week highlighting temporary art and recent construction activities.

Ballard

Slurry wall construction continues through early September. During this time, you should anticipate:

  • Heavy truck traffic on Shilshole Ave NW and 24th Ave NW; please pay attention to flaggers.
  • Parking restrictions along the east side of 24th Ave NW so construction trucks can exit the work site.
  • Noise and vibrations related to excavation and concrete pours.
  • Longer than normal working hours; crews will be working nights and weekends. Noise levels will be monitored.

Once the slurry wall is complete, crews will spend a few weeks removing and setting up new equipment and then crews will begin excavating the shaft. You can anticipate an uptick in truck traffic as soil is hauled off site. We'll send information about excavation impacts and haul routes in a future update.

Excess grout and soil are loaded onto trucks to be hauled away in East Ballard.

Soil stabilization continues. Through late December, you should anticipate:

  • NW 45th St to be closed to traffic; vehicles must detour onto NW 46th St.
  • 11th Ave NW to allow two-way traffic via one lane controlled by flaggers during work hours.
  • Burke-Gilman Trail users to be detoured to the north side of NW 45th St; flaggers to help direct traffic. Please follow all detour guidance on site. Bicyclists must cross train tracks at 90-degree angles.
  • Noise and vibrations typical of a construction site.

See anticipated traffic impacts through 2022 on our website.

Fremont

Over the next two weeks, crews will relocate existing utilities and construct the guide walls for shaft secant pile construction. Secant pile construction is expected to begin in mid-September (see our last update for more details). Over the next few weeks, you should anticipate:

  • Crews will perform overnight work from 7 pm to 6 am beginning Thursday, Sept. 3, in Leary Way NW to decommission a water main. The middle two lanes of Leary Way NW will be closed. Please pay attention to signage and flaggers on site. This work is done at night because it requires water to be shut off. Some residents and businesses will experience temporary water shut offs during this time. If your water service will be impacted, you should have received a door hanger from our crews. Learn how to prepare for a water outage (translations available).
  • NW 36th St between Leary Way NW and 3rd Ave NW to be closed (through remainder of the project).
  • Pedestrians detoured to the north side of Leary Way NW.
  • A pump and bypass system running 24/7 to re-route an existing drainage line around the secant pile construction. This system is powered by a generator and will be in place through the end of the year.
  • More equipment staged on site (such as a crane) and concrete trucks moving in and out.
  • Noise and vibrations typical of a construction site.

Crews started soil remediation work. For the next few weeks, you should anticipate:

  • Intermittent noise and vibrations associated with pavement breaking, concrete removal and excavation (vactor trucks).
  • The eastern sidewalk on Interlake Ave N to be closed near the work site.
  • Impacts to the northbound traffic lane on Interlake Ave N. Please pay attention to signage on site.
  • Increased truck traffic through the area.

Regular work hours will be Monday through Friday, 7 am to 5:30 pm. Night and weekend work may occur to maintain progress.

Queen Anne

Over the next few weeks, crews will install the trail detour around the work area, set up and excavation support system and prepare for secant pile wall construction to begin in mid- to late September. For the next few weeks, you should anticipate:

  • The West Ewing Mini Park parking lot to be closed. This closure is anticipated to last through mid-2023.
  • A localized Ship Canal Trail detour through summer 2022. See our previous update for a map.
  • Noise and vibrations typical of a construction site.
  • Equipment being staged in the area.
