Seven Seattle City Council seats are up for grabs. Meet candidates vying for your vote.

Seattle City Council

If you live in Seattle, seven City Council seats are up for grabs. The 14 candidates vying to represent specific council districts — from Rainier Beach to Lake City — have visited our studio over the past several months. Each one provided a statement on why they should earn your vote and they all squared off in debates with City Inside/Out's Brian Callanan. The candidates also addressed issues important to their constituents at these district debates.

Here's a quick breakdown of the races district by district:

City Council District 1
Lisa Herbold is running for a second term to represent District 1, an area covering West Seattle and South Park. She is being challenged by Phil Tavel, an attorney and former app developer.

City Council District 2
With Council President Bruce Harrell not running for another term, community organizer Tammy Morales is back, this time facing Seattle Police Department Crime-Prevention Coordinator Mark Solomon in the race to represent Southeast Seattle in District 2 .

City Council District 3
Kshama Sawant is running for a third term to represent District 3 on the Seattle City Council. PrideFest Director Egan Orion is challenging her in the district that covers Capitol Hill, the Central District, and down to Mount Baker.

City Council District 4
Former Seattle City Council legislative aide Alex Pedersen and journalist and historian Shaun Scott beat out eight other candidates in the primary race for the Seattle City Council District 4 seat, spanning the University District, Fremont, Eastlake, and Ravenna.

City Council District 5
Debora Juarez is running to represent North Seattle for a second term on the Seattle City Council. The District 5 councilmember is facing a challenge from attorney Ann Davison Sattler

City Council District 6
Former Seattle City Councilmember Heidi Wills is hoping to make a return to Seattle politics. She is running against current City Council policy advisor Dan Strauss to represent District 6, which includes neighborhoods Ballard and Fremont.

City Council District 7
Assistant Seattle City Attorney Andrew Lewis and former Seattle Police Chief Jim Pugel are running to represent District 7, an area that covers downtown Seattle out to Magnolia.

Candidates vying to guide Washington's largest school district

Seattle Schools

Seattle Public Schools educates more than 50,000 students. To do that, the school system employs more than 3,000 teachers with an operating budget of more than $1 billion.

Here are statements from candidates looking to help lead the state's largest public school district:

There are three King County Council seats up for a vote this election. One of those candidates, Joe McDermott, is running unopposed in the Council's 8th district.

Port of Seattle

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is expanding and booming. And the Port of Seattle is looking to take advantage of the region's growing trade ties to Asia and the thriving cruise ship and tourism industry. 

Here are statements from the four candidates looking to help lead Seattle's airport and seaport: 

• Port of Seattle, Commissioner Position 2: Sam ChoGrant Degginger

• Port of Seattle, Commissioner Position 5: Fred Felleman & Garth Jacobson

 

King County Director of Elections is responsible for 1/3 of state's electorate

King County is home to 1.3 million registered voters. And overseeing the state's largest electorate is incumbent King County Elections Director Julie Wise. She is being challenged by Mark Greene, who has worked as a legal assistant.
